It’s a beautiful October day at Pike Place Market! Inviting all car traffic back Monday through Thursday was a mistake, that we should fix for next year.

It's a perfect day to tell SDOT to pedestrianize Barbara Bailey Way (were the Sunday farmers market sets up in Capitol Hill). Come get your market goods and then pop into the open house just around the corner.

Imagine Barbara Bailey Way not as a queue for idling, often speeding, vehicles but as a permanent place for people walking and rolling between Cal, light rail, and the small businesses that hug the plaza. COME TO THE LOW POLLUTION OPEN HOUSE THIS SUNDAY 09/27.

@centralseattlestreetsforall.org has been out talking with neighbors about an exciting opportunity to pedestrianize Barbara Bailey Way. Let’s be sure to show up this Sunday and express that! Put it in your phone calendar or, if you’re a wall calendar girlie like me, mark it for Sunday Sept 27 1-4 pm

The author of the @seattletimes-rss.bsky.social newsletter this morning just couldn't help themselves: "Whoops! This downtown Seattle street has a big, bright problem...And it's mucking up traffic..." Their car brained takes are like uncontrollable tics.

@transportation.seattle.gov lots of confused people here just in the ten minutes I’ve been observing. Not to mention confused drivers who seem to largely default to NOT yielding for people making their intent to cross the street known to drivers. This is dangerous. Plz fix.

Sam @sluikens.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Hey @transportation.seattle.gov what’s going on with the RRFBs at 15th Ave E and E Harrison St? It’s not clear for people walking whether you’re discouraging use of this crossing (assuming this sign blockage was put up by the department).

"It’s high off the road, packed with safety features, and can self-drive.." It's unfortunate that this journalist appears to take the Cybertruck owner's word for what safety features are.

Exactly, for so many drivers, this is just away to avoid E John at everyone else's expense.

Sam @sluikens.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
The result, especially for people who are new to the neighborhood or visiting, is confusion. Here's a place that seems by all accounts FOR people walking and rolling. And yet, when drivers see a green light at Broadway, people walking and rolling become obstacles to their commute.

Sam @sluikens.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Designated as a Festival Street, the design is *supposed* to slow WB drivers giving them a real sense that they are not the main character on this stretch. But as with most places where cars are allowed at all, they are, by default, the main character and act accordingly.

Sam @sluikens.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
For folks who aren't as familiar with Barbara Bailey Way, it's a 250-foot section of street that's been designed in a way that promotes walking and rolling between a the plaza, Cal Anderson Park, Capitol Hill light rail station, residential buildings, coffee shops and other local businesses.

Sam @sluikens.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Pedestrianizing Barbara Bailey Way, that stretch bordering the north end of Cal Anderson park where the Sunday Famers Market sets up, would be an easy way to improve the neighborhood. If you’re already there for your market goods on 9/27, stop in and tell @transportation.seattle.gov we want this.

Large non-market vehicles not only crowd out limited space on Pike Place, they also use valuable curb space on 1st Ave that could be used for business and customer access. Not to mention these large vehicles towering over storefronts, making it harder for people to discover Market businesses.

We need a police chief who understands that traffic safety is public safety. It’ll be ideal also if they can help some local media outlets 👀 @seattletimes.com 👀 see why bold moves to improve public transportation and speed up Vision Zero projects is actually newsworthy.

The department is also well aware of dangerous conditions all along 12th from Microsoft shuttle bus using the bike lane as a parking spot to utility trucks using the turn lane, to forcing cyclists into the door zone of parked cars. Their response to these dangers so far appears to be “good luck 😃”

And yet when we push electeds to address dangerous driver behavior with better infra for people outside cars, some of the loudest voices against safer streets cite the “selfish,” “entitled,” or “special interests” of a few as if driving a car recklessly through a city isn’t somehow entitled.
