"Cornell’s student paper and the lawsuit had identified the seven fraternity brothers...And once men start to face consequences for sexual violence, no matter how small, that’s typically when the second kind of reaction kicks in: victim-blaming and rape denial. "

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

If Democrats think winning back congress this year and the presidency in 2028 is enough, they are sorely mistaken. We'll be right back where we're at in 2032 with an even more fascist and white supremacist Republican party. It's not enough to win power.

i wish universities were a safe space. i love learning in group settings, there’s classes that have changed my life, but i haven’t felt safe on a university campus in a long time. and it’s hard to realize that many educational spaces are not safe or accessible to the traumatized.

Please read my first substantial articulation of anti-sanity theory!
"Psychiatry and psychology depend upon, are mobilized and constituted by, and are situated within social and cultural relations shaped by compulsory sanity. An analysis that limits its focus to the institutional borders of psy disciplines overlooks the social relationships and cultural practices within which they are embedded, which destabilize psychiatry as a self-identical form of subjectivity, agency, and authority. Challenging the exclusivity that psychiatry claims over madness means not only challenging that authority but also the presumption that this authority is possessed by psychiatrists and psychologists. I propose the power over madness does not belong to psychiatrists and psychologists but to the order of compulsory sanity that constitutes the psy-function."

People tend to associate madness with harm. Yet one iteration of sanity helped kill and subjugate hundreds of millions: Europeans asserted their rationality over the “foolishness” of indigenous populations, using this claim to exalt their rule. Sanity was the founding logic of many colonial projects

Restorative justice also has huge limitations in the context of sexual violence. The perpetrator must confess. There cannot be a structural power disparity between victim and perpetrator. It is not safe for intimate partner violence. It is too time-intensive for victims with multiple perpetrators.

check out the most significant essay i’ve written this far open.substack.com/pub/tenderly...
The category of personality disorder reappropriates vulnerabilities produced by the socially manufactured conditions of capitalist, colonial, eugenic, cisheteropatriarchal, and white supremacist society, subsuming these wounds under the interpretive hegemony of the same culpable system. These diagnoses refigure embodied responses produced through the social exploitation, magnification, and alienation of vulnerability, enclosing these responses within the boundaries of psychiatric diagnosis. They institute simultaneous structural magnification and avoidance of vulnerability within the interior of the bodymind, problematizing “disordered” processes of social personality rather than problematizing the unethical and unjust realities in which bodyminds are made to function. PDphobia isolates the imperfect, damaged, and disruptive ways in which bodyminds function but eliminates lines of questioning that inquire after the compulsive social and power relations that disable that functioning, which force people diagnosed with personality disorders to operate consistently with the exigencies imposed on them.

the media in this country treats bigotry coming from a place of fear as a valid public position. eventually this leads you to the ludicrous place where “the muslim mayor of new york city shouldn’t attend the 25th anniversary commemoration of 9/11” is treated as newsworthy opinion
"This guy, I think, is just an in-your-face type of guy that — for lack of a better word — enjoys this kind of controversy.
I'm just not in favor of him being around, so if he didn't come, I'd say great, we would go. But if he's going to come, I would venture to say a lot of people might not go," said Hughes, who is now retired and lives on Long Island.
The grieving father said he disagrees with Mamdani's politics and expressed anger toward the mayor. "Just the thought of him there rubs me the wrong way," he said.
