I do think it's pretty funny that of the various novel companions who get multi year sabbaticals and then return to the TARDIS, Sam in Seeing I is the only one who all in all had a pretty chill time

Alternate universe where they let writers opt out of writing for her and the Sam Is Missing arc is 10 books long

It's the only one where it's so pronounced it breaches the narration in hilariously overt thoughts from Sam about how terrible she is. My fav case study apart from it is Placebo where GR wanted to use Stacy+Ssard as the companions instead, and this being vetoed is why they disapear halfway through!

There's def huge sexism + also just more audience/writer identification with Fitz than Sam; I don't think it's acc a large number of books that transparently hate Sam, but Fitz's trick is that if you don't identify with him straightforwardly, you can take the piss or throw him at wall and it scans.

Apart from one moment that is pretty un-enticing, I think it works as a starting point. But it's a starting point where Fitz sucks.

Basically the thing with Taint is it starts Fitz at his absolute worst, in a combination of intent (he very much has an arc) and misjudgement (of how shitty is a reasonable amount of shitty for a going nowhere 1963 bum to be.) It's sort of Owen in Torchwood-y, if he didn't actually do the crime.

Thank you so much for the reply. If you have a discrete means for me to ask (e.g an email), I would appreciate it being passed in a private capacity, at your choice.

Three photos from my collection of a boy and his cat who obviously loved each other very much. Ca. 1950s. ❤️
Black and white photo of a young white boy kneeling on a linoleum floor, offer a small, whole fish to a fluffy black kitten with a white spot at its throat. The same boy as previous photo, this time he is sitting in front of a large pile of Christmas presents, wearing a plaid bathrobe and pajamas, curled up in his lap is the same black cat!Black and white photo of a smiling blonde, white boy holding a beautiful longhaired black cat. He’s standing at a table with a cowboy-themed birthday cake in front of him and other boys on either side.

Has anyone considers that Odysseus's problem is that his men are just too delicious. Yes, he angered the gods, but so many of them getting eaten cant be a coincidence.

A lot of people don't realise this but in the UK we have to replace our Prime Minister every two or three years or else the rights revert back to Marvel

So how did we get here, with Starmer on the way out after two years? To some extent, it does go back to the beginning. It was not an enthusiastic victory for Labour. Getting rid of the Tories was the top reason people voted for them in 2024, though with their message of 'Change' also resonating.

I do think, to borrow a point from @stephenkb.bsky.social, the story since Cameron has been that the British public hate the Cameron settlement (lower but not low taxes, worse services) and the underlying problem is that no PM has really had the courage to change that settlement.

If you aren't sure why a thing about America is the way it is, just say 'if they did that for everyone, they'd have to do it for Black people, so they do it for no one'. You'll be right far more often than you're wrong.

This may be my favourite argument ever advanced by a politician:
Screenshot from The Guardian liveblog, which reads ‘In a separate interview on Sky News, Kyle said that he had dinner with Streeting at the weekend and they went to see a movie, The Devil Wears Prada 2, together. He said this showed Streeting was not plotting to oust Starmer.

“Somebody who is planning to pull the plug and launch a leadership bid in a couple of days’ time doesn’t go to the cinema with a friend.“‘

Imagine if Andy Burnham ran in the Arbroath & Broughty Ferry by-election and won, but then lost the subsequent leadership election and had to spend 3 years just being the MP for Arbroath & Broughty Ferry.

@kateorman.bsky.social Hi Kate, just recently finished Fallen Gods, your and Jon's novella with the 8th Doctor. Absolutely brilliant, gutting book. I was wondering if either of you happen to have the Postlude for the Myth Makers fanzine anywhere? It's so hard to find any of those stories. Np if not!

Charlie Kirk spent his life‘s work and all of his energy and time targeting out-groups while arguing for a world in which gun massacres would be easy to enact, plentiful, and inevitable, and he became famous and wealthy doing it, and we’re now not supposed to mention that because it’s not polite.

Quite good column from Ezra Klein www.nytimes.com/2025/07/20/o...
Debates about Israel often circle the same, strangely posed question: Does Israel have the right to exist? The question is engineered to trap the conversation in the past rather than capture the urgency of the present. Israel does exist. It is a rich, nuclear-armed power with the strongest military in the region, by far. It decapitated Hezbollah and humiliated Iran. Hamas could perpetrate the murders of Oct. 7 only because Israel had become so certain of its strength that it allowed its attention to basic questions of security to lapse. But Hamas did not then, and certainly does not now, threaten Israel’s existence.

Israel has more than the right to exist. It has the strength to exist. The Jews who live there have more than the right to self-determination. They have self-determination. The same cannot be said for Palestinians. About two million Palestinians live inside Israel. They are, by any measure, second-class citizens. In 2018, three Palestinian members of Israel’s Knesset proposed a law to affirm “the principle of equal citizenship for every citizen” and outlaw “discrimination on grounds of nationality, race, religion, gender, language, color, political outlook, ethnic origin or social status.”Yuli Edelstein, then the speaker of the Israeli Knesset, would not permit it even to be debated. “This is a preposterous bill that any intelligent individual can see must be blocked immediately,” Edelstein said. “A bill that aims to gnaw at the foundations of the state must not be allowed in the Knesset.”

It is revealing of the morally weakened position Israel now inhabits that it cannot survive the principle of political equality.

The situation is immeasurably worse for the five million Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza. Israel decides where they can move and where they can go. Israel decides who can enter the West Bank and Gaza and who can leave. Israel decides what the Palestinian Authority can do and what it cannot. While I was driving across the West Bank on a reporting trip last year, the debate that raged in America over the protesters who chanted “from the river to the sea” disintegrated, for me, into farce. There is a single sovereign between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea and every checkpoint and road closure was a reminder of who it is.
