It’s a lie in a molten state under the ceiling fan sort of #caturday here in CA.
A tabby cat named Merlin splays out on a Gray sofa, his head hanging off the edge of the cushion. All 4 feet and his tummy are visible being caressed by the gentle breeze from ceiling fan out of view.

“‘Learning happens as a consequence of cognitive processing. Cognitive processing is typically effortful, & that’s what AI effectively removes,’ says cognitive psychologist Daniel Willingham at UVA. ‘People are really worried about that’.”🧪
“And science - in which people need to critically evaluate theories and data - is one important area that's under threat from the Al revolution in large language models (LLMs). "There is a risk that students outsource precisely the activities through which scientific thinking develops: formulating hypotheses, interpreting evidence, considering alternatives and struggling with uncertainty," says Thomas Nygren, who studies education and critical thinking at Uppsala University in Sweden.”

I’m in an Apple store with a live demo of “AI” features and hoooooooly sh!t do the photo features look like garbage. “Reframe” your photo with “AI”? Yeah, you can tell. “Extend” the background with slop? Instantly spotted. Sorry for posting so much, I’m about to hand over my phone for repair.

Finance: Why are you buying so many snack size Ziploc bags for lab? Shouldn’t this be an office expense? Me: Uhhhh, no? They’re great disposable germination domes for plant experiments to prevent cross-contamination 😂
A shiny-interior grow tent is filled with almost 100 small black plastic pots with soil inside. Each one is covered with a clear snack sized Ziploc bag. A person wearing a white lab coat and blue nitrile gloves is using a hose on a stick to water individual plants.

This is what my colleague’s “AI” analysis thought would make a great soluble liquid product. It doesn’t photograph well, but this is an unsurprising, black, congealed mass of horribleness. I’m not sure there even is any free solution. Chemistry jobs remain provably safe from LLMs. #chemchat

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, holding a red ball labeled "A SILLY MEME".
The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

My hot (lukewarm?) take: In an age of growing inequality, we need exponentially-scaling penalties, rather than linear ones. Most fines are a rounding error to the top 1%. No statutory $ X per violation. We need $ Y for the first, doubling every subsequent lifetime violation. *Bury* the scofflaws.

SPUR’s new report details how catastrophic it will be for Bay Area transit riders if the public transit funding Measure RTM fails. But drivers will feel it too, w an estimated doubling of Bay Bridge crossing times and more than 3X longer through the Caldecott Tunnel. www.spur.org/sites/defaul...
“The Bay Area's Top Three Highway Bottlenecks After Potential Transit Cuts
The Bay Bridge, Caldecott Tunnel, and I-680 in Walnut Creek/Concord would experience some of the most significant travel delays in both directions if looming cuts to transit service are not prevented.

Maybe an underappreciated aspect of bus lanes, but BOY HOWDY would I love if bus lanes came with a pavement standard. The faster buses move, the bigger the impact of pavement on rider experience. The 38R at full-speed in a dedicated lane shakes so bad it’s almost impossible to read a book!

Sometimes the WAR ON WALKING results in no sidewalks at all. Sometimes they put “something” in — but does that really make things walkable for anyone except those without any other choices? The #WARonWALKING takes many forms, but it’s always about making things comfortable for vehicles, not people.
Image of a wide concrete overpass with a huge truck travelling dangerously close to a thin, uncomfortable looking concrete “sidewalk.” The text says “Don’t buy the lie that there’s a war on cars. They’ve been waging a war on walking for a century.” Tagline at the bottom says the Urban Truth Collective. #UrbanTruth #WarOnCars
