Alternate phrasing: The Supreme Court Justices and anybody participating in this execution who had plausible ability to resist are getting charged for this when I'm weighing their hearts to decide whether or not to feed them to Ammit.

I'm not going to call out anybody by name. But it's pretty easy to find physicians who claim to oppose capital punishment but still feel like docs can ethically participate in executions (or even potentially be coerced to do so). They have to fire me. (3/3)

I'd almost certainly get my own sanctions if I had ever been in that position. Because if coerced to do the certification, I'd have checked the "homicide" box on the manner of death, which automatically kicked it to the medical examiner instead of me in the places I practiced. (2/3)

Not terribly sure that this would be a view that has legal support, but I think that any physician who participates in an execution in the US should have their licenses and prescription authority immediately revoked. (Except possibly to certify death after the fact.) (1/3)

The important part of playing the devil's advocate in regards to the death penalty... ...is that you don't have to do it. Seriously. Stop it. The devil didn't need an advocate here. And why are you volunteering for that job anyway?

Corollary: if legislators are going to have franking privileges, they should be required to have fax machines to receive constituent faxes. (I’m sure my view here is completely unbiased and unrelated to my hatred of the telephone and possession of a fax machine.)

I do not think that a system that depends on having citizens call their legislators every time something important comes up is a good one. Especially if things are going to come up this often.

Good thing that Talarico bailed on his support for trans folk. Otherwise Republicans might attack him. But now that he’s thrown some folks under the bus, surely he’ll avoid anybody calling him Talafreako and making up stories about 6 year old children.

So this linkedin post, which I ostensibly agree with, just popped on my lil feed. And it's like - why did this person need an LLM to generate the text, and an image model to generate a data centre cooling plant image? That's easily *millions* times more energy than writing + stock pic

Do sustainable data centers actually exist?
I've spent the past few months writing about data centers in
backyards, in neighborhoods, the ocean, and in places that never
signed up to become heat islands. So when QTS started running ads
about zero-water cooling and covering 100% of their power costs, I
paid attention.
Some of it is real progress, and worth acknowledging.
Their closed-loop cooling system eliminates continuous water use.
Not "reduced," eliminated. One initial fill, and then the same water
circulates for the life of the facility. In a sector where evaporative
cooling can burn through millions of gallons a year, that's a
meaningful shift.
They also commit to sourcing carbon-free power and covering their
full energy costs so the load doesn't spill onto local communities, It's
better than the industry baseline, which is a low bar.
But here's the part we can't skip.
A water-free cooling system doesn't change the fact that these
facilities still pull enormous amounts of electricity. Carbon-free
sourcing doesn't change the strain on the grid. And none of it
changes the physical reality: land use, heat output, noise, and the
slow creep of industrial infrastructure into residential space. So yes. QTS is doing more than most. They're one of the few actually
pushing the model forward.
The "sustainable data center- is still a stretch. The footprint is too
big, the demand curve is too steep. and the impacts don't disappear
just because the marketing copy is cleaner.
If the industry wants to use the word "sustainable: it has to earn it,
not redefine it.
Because the future doesn't get preheated by accident. It gets
preheated by the choices we scale and the impacts we fail to
acknowledge.
At what point does "sustainable" become more than a marketing
Claim and turn into an actual standard?

GenAI is what I am going to optimistically call "pre-systemic" - it hasn't been baked in yet. And the stakes are HIGH, bc once baked in, the climate impacts push it up into a high category among the plastics industry, agriculture etc So....what that means is that heavy users *are* morally culpable

Huh. So a scientist knowingly used a computer program that literally couldn’t exist without widespread intellectual property theft and apparently had no qualms about that theft. But is now unhappy that the IP-stealing machine stole their IP?

If a company trained their LLM on one of your papers or academic book chapters and you didn’t get any settlement money, you should be allowed to go take something from the CEO’s house. A hand tool or maybe something from their freezer. A turkey, perhaps. Or you get to grab a houseplant.

Anybody know what the Stanford rapist is up to? Last I knew, he was living in the Dayton, OH area and cruising the bars. Living with his parents (including the dad, who described the rape in a letter to the court as "20 minutes of action" and thought he'd already been over-punished before jail time)
