Gene Wolfe is far and away my favorite author, and Humble Bundle is offering 38 of his books for pay-what-you-will. I own physical copies of (nearly) all of these, but I'm willing to spend thirty bucks to have them all in ebook form so they'll always be with me. www.humblebundle.com/books/ultima...

It took almost a decade for the "Moon" filmmaker to get his animated adaptation of "Rogue Trooper" off the ground. One shortcut he won't take? AI.

So Draft2Digital thought it was a good idea to send out an email blast, "inviting" authors to take advantage of "Spotify's free audiobook creation offer". (Screencap below) I wonder who on their marketing team thought authors would like to steal from voice actors the way "AI"/LLMs stole *our* work.
"Spotify has an Audiobook offer for you

If you’ve dreamed of turning your stories into audiobooks, but thought production costs were out of reach, our friends at Spotify have an offer for you.

You can make up to five digitally narrated English audiobooks for free using Spotify for Author’s new Audiobook Creation Tools.

This program is currently only available to U.S.-based self-published authors through Spotify for Authors.

Why use Spotify’s Audiobook Creation Tools?

There’s no exclusivity requirement. Your audiobooks will be available to millions of listeners on Spotify and you can also distribute them everywhere else through Spotify’s integration with Voices by INaudio.
You can choose voices from leading ElevenLabs models.
You can fine-tune your pronunciations.
You can preview everything and make it just right. Your audiobook is ready when YOU say it’s ready.
Did we mention you can create five audiobooks for free?
Why consider adding digitally narrated audiobooks to your offerings?

Human audiobook narration is publishing’s gold standard. Yet not all indies have reached a point in their career where the expense of human audiobook production makes good business sense. Digital narration provides indies the opportunity to reach new readers and test market audiobooks with little to no financial risk. Some indies who are further along in their careers release both human narrated books and digitally narrated books to hit different audiences.

For readers, digitally narrated audiobooks offer a treasure trove of new books and authors to explore that may not have been affordable or accessible before. Any digitally narrated audiobooks are clearly labeled as such for listeners on the platform.

Ready to offer audiobooks to your readers? Create your Spotify for Authors account today."

Some parts of growing up - discipline, restraint, patience, caring about others, etc. - are important. But you can have these things without giving up the best parts of being a kid! Hold onto your creativity, your silliness, your little hobbies, your sense of wonder, etc. Also: LOVE that quote 🤣

New: Macklemore will donate entire $1M of his earnings from Ed Sheeran's tour to six orgs helping Palestinians — and invites Robert Kraft to match him. Says he wants to center Palestinians being killed + journalists & aid workers who keep going. "Their risk is of a far different order than mine."
With everything that has happened over the last 48 hours, I want to bring the conversation back to where it belongs: to the Palestinian people who are still being killed, still living under military occupation, and still fighting for their freedom.
I will be donating the entire $1 million of my net earnings from Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour to six organizations working directly to support the Palestinian people. And I invite Robert Kraft to match my donation. Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting. A Palestinian life is no less valuable than any other life on this earth.
That is what this has always been about. Not me. Not a tour. Not the headlines or the controversy. It is about Palestinians right to freedom, dignity and safety in their own homeland. I want to center the parents carrying their children into hospitals without the basic resources to treat them, and the physicians, paramedics, journalists and aid workers who keep going back in. I want to center the organizers and activists who have paid real costs for standing with Palestine. Their risk is of a far different order than mine.
Just yesterday, 15 year old Muhammad al Zinati was killed in an Israeli strike while rushing to help aid worker Sherif Lubbad, who had already been injured. He was a child. Both were murdered. Both should be alive. And the ones still under the rubble, whose names exist only in the memories of people who may not have survived to speak them. Writing a check is one of the least costly forms of solidarity available to me. I am doing it because I can, and because these organizations are doing the work while much of the world debates it.
But aid alone cannot address the conditions that make it necessary. This is a manmade injustice, and I believe it requires immediate political change. Palestinians have lived for decades without basic rights and should not have to wait another day to be free. That is where my focus will remain. I will …

The argument against AI should always start with the THEFT of creative labor the technology was built on. The intent was CRIMINAL. CEOs should be facing charges, not class action lawsuits. The devastation these companies continue to inflict on creative communities demands accountability.

If a generative AI CEO is telling you something, take it with a grain of salt the size of an iceberg. So if they want regulation now, it is more likely something to do with finances than an immediate existential threat. These dipshits do not care about existential threats other than going bankrupt.

It's very easy to wear a suit and tie in any major city, even if the aesthetic has mostly disappeared from daily life, because there are people outside wearing pink tutus with Army boots. As usual, your liberation is connected to other people's liberation.
Bobby Mars on Twitter writes: "If you wear a collared shirt and nice shoes out to the bar in the rust belt, multiple people will ask you if you just came from a wedding. Aesthetic standards for men’s attire are horrendously low"

Resetera.com post by me in a thread about the cutting room floor being ddos'd. A mod message says I have been banned for 5 days for inflammatory generalisations. My posts says l "Example 1 billion of why it's always safe to assume gen ai weirdos are terrible people. There's no reason for decorum or respectability here when you use a technology built on theft that's actively hurting people."

Then I reply to the user Exodus where I agree to their hypothetical that voluntary ai users are stupid and unworthy of respect. For context they were saying this as if it was a bad thing.

the lessons we need to take are clear. Dolly said "find out who you are and do it on purpose", and Tim Curry's line is "don't dream it, be it" they would both be disappointed if we wrote that off as corny. so what? it's necessary. we have everything to lose if we are dishonest to ourselves.
