It would be nice if some of these people worried about the very real possibility that their kids might NOT COME HOME FROM SCHOOL ALIVE with some fraction of the intensity that they worry about made up bullshit like this.

I can't believe how many times I've walked by this store over the years without connecting it to my Roman antoninianus of the eponymous (?) emperor with the weird neck. Only realized while using the coin to teach the numismatic history of the 3rd century Imperial Crisis today to my honors students.
Storefront of P R O B U S in Manhattan, NY.Roman antoninianus of the Emperor Probus, sporting radiate crown scepter that looks like a robot claw hand, and freakishly long neck.

I once spent time in a mid-size Greek town where every man seemed to be named either Nikos, Yannis, or Yorgos. I had a dream about a letter arriving there addressed to "Nikos, Μαλεσίνα, 350 01, Greece," and seeing half of the town's men assemble in the central square to debate who it was meant for.

Somehow I found Coptic syntax very intuitive, in contrast to every other language I've ever learned. So, of course I haven't used it since I learned it in grad school...but I'd love to come back to it. 4/

We spent a while reading the "History of Joseph the Carpenter" (included in the appendix of Lambdin's textbook), a text which spends most of its length describing Jesus' mortal father's descent into a VERY thinly disguised Ancient Egyptian underworld. It was super cool. 3/

Coptic is wonderful! Especially because I learned from a linguist of Ancient Egyptian who loved teaching it because you can access the phonology. Unfortunately, the Coptic Christian undergrads usually only took a semester, and his grad students demanded he teach Middle Egyptian courses instead. 1/

Athenian democracy was deeply flawed, but we could really benefit from adopting ostracism (elections for least popular citizen, whose “winner” is exiled for a decade) and mandatory post-term audits (euthunai) of state officials.

Ancient Halai in Lokris, modern Theologos near Malesina. It was pretty rinky-dink for a classical town, the chief excavator was mostly interested in the Neolithic occupation. Plutarch mentions that Sulla destroyed it, but allowed its people to rebuild after they gave him a nice fish.

The Plan of Saint Gall in black and white. I couldn't find one that I thought was good for students to write on, so I made this. I took some liberties with the size of some spaces (to allow for text) and few descriptions, but overall I'm happy with the result.
A plan for the layout of a monastic community that was never built. The document is a copy of the famous Plan of Saint Gall. It shows what buildings would be in a monastic community and the layout of the community.

Weirdly, I had to learn this as an undergrad because the ancient Greek town I excavated in had square towers, but in the 4th century they built a round tower (better against catapult stones). However they could only afford one now tower, so they put it right by the main gate to show they were “hip.”

Even before “AI” there was a general sense that economic elites were moving to automate ALL stable jobs out of existence, including those of people with a college education. It seems pointless to work towards a job that will suddenly cease to exist, or be made forever precarious.

An article on Academia by Guillaume Aral suggests the intaglio belonged to a daughter of King Varazdat (r. 374–78), based on the appearance of Varaz ("wild boar") in both names. He further suggests that she may have been the wife of king Vramsapuh (r. c. 389–414). This seems somewhat speculative. 4/

An image of this intaglio appears in the Wikipedia article for Queen Zarmanduxt, wife of King Pap (r. 370–374/5) and mother and regent of Kings Aršak III (r. 378–90) and Vałaršk (r. 378–86). But the use of the image seems to be based on confusion of the Grigorid Pap and the Aršakuni King Pap. 3/

There is no known Queen Varazduxt known in the literature, although this is the name of a daughter of King Xosrov Kotak (r. c. 330–38) married to Pap, son of Yusik the High Priest and great grandson of St. Grigor the Illuminator. There is no evidence that she was ever a queen.2/

Thomas of Margā, The Book of Governors 48–9. "...he saw some sorceresses washing clothes by the Zäb, and they were singing to each other the songs of devils...Now as he drew near to them on his way a small fragment of one of the refrains which they were singing became fixed in his mind"
From Thomas of Margā, The Book of Governors 48–9:
And it came to pass that once when he [the noble Basṭōhmagh] was passing over the bridge, he saw some sorceresses washing clothes by the Zab, and they were singing to each other the songs of devils, and everything which was round about them danced as they sang. Now as he drew near to them on his way a small fragment of one of the refrains which they were singing became fixed in his mind, and when he had gone a short distance from them, he began to meditate upon what he had heard. And straightway devils joined themselves to him openly, and required of him, saying, “Command us to do something which thou wishest us to do.” Now when Basṭōhmagh saw this, he feared greatly, and he acted craftily with them and said to them, “Gather together these stones, and pile them in a heap,”—now these stones are known to this day—“and follow me whither I am going.” And he drove the mule upon which he was riding quickly along until he came to the cell of the holy old man, and he said to the devils, “Take this mule, and watch him until I come out;” and he went in trembling, and revealed to Mar Jacob what had happened to him. And Rabban answered and said to him, “Repeat before me what thou hast heard,” and while Basṭōhmagh was repeating, Rabban wrote down upon the ground with his finger what he heard. And when he had finished it all Rabban made the sign of the cross over the writing, and said to Basṭōhmagh, “Repeat once more what thou hast already repeated;” and he said to him, “I know nothing of it whatever;” and Rabban answered, and said as he laughed, “Rise up, and look after thy mule, for the devils have loosed him and gone away.”
