So, just to confirm, the BBC can’t keep Robin Ince on the air because his trans allyship brings the organisation into disrepute, but they can keep David Walliams, who performed Nazi salutes at the recording of this very show, on the air despite him being predatory towards women. Cool. Very normal.

One thing that gets my goat is to read *leftists* saying that "capitalism" has produced all the great wonders of modern technological advance (alongside the horrors it took to get here). "Capitalism" didn't produce those things; people did, working frankly in a whole variety of social arrangements.

👇 This sums up underlying problem with actually existing Brexit. The ways you actually maximise the benefits of Brexit run against the electoral coalition for Brexit, are not popular enough with Remainers, just end up with 'you're divorced, but you refuse to join Tinder or move out of your home'.

I see this on the right - the idea that the existence of foreign academic staff and faculty are evidence of discrimination against natives. It's not discrimination, its selection: academia is a global marketplace, the US is the biggest center of that market. So yes, some foreign talent will win.

Sorry it's just kind of on my mind, but the point is not just to have created, but to create. To be involved in the process of its coming to be. The AI folks see rewards that can come when art is in the world, though actually so much art is not rewarded, & that's all they want. Not to be an artist.

Your annual reminder that if you get this cracker joke and are confused by it, it's apparently because "ffi" is a special character in some fonts and when the typeface is changed to one that doesn't have it, those letters disappear. It's supposed to be "coffin medicine".

Article 22 is a jewelry company that repurposes Vietnam War shrapnel and battlefield debris. A portion of their profits goes to the Mine Advisory Group, which works to remove landmines still left in Laos (they've removed more than 300k mines!). I like the company's "Shard" necklace collection.
Someone pouring melted metal. The melted metal is used to make bracelets. One of the designs in their "shard" necklace collection, which is available as made-to-order. Just write "shard" into their website's search bar to find it. A landmine blowing up in Laos.

not that the present economic picture is rosy, but i do think that popular culture — and specifically nostalgia bait television — is a big part of the reason that our public memory of the 1970s, 1980s and even 1990s seems to miss the real economic pain that marked each of those decades.
