a German word for the feeling when you never meant for a perfectly nice dress to become your go-to funeral outfit, and it feels somehow unfair on the dress, but it's just too much effort to pick out something else.

Week 1, when the actual teaching and time with colleagues was complete joy, but everything else was such a toxic bin-fire that I'm willingly watching the 50 Cent boxing drama for a bit of catharsis, and sulking that it isn't violent enough.

If I were running a university where staff spent weeks and weeks of time putting grant proposals together only for UKRI to feed them into LLMs without informed consent—effectively theft of the time and work—I’d be taking serious action to defend those staff. But I’m not running a university, so

Literally hours later, although at least nobody was killed.
MSF International 2
@MSF
On 13 September, an MSF bus carrying 10 humanitarian staff in Gaza City was damaged by an Israeli airstrike on a targeted vehicle just two metres away. One of our colleagues was injured in the strike.
The bus was clearly identified as an MSF vehicle, with a large MSF sticker visible on its roof. Once again, Israeli forces have shown a blatant disregard for the safety of humanitarian and medical personnel.
Nowhere is safe in Gaza. Civilians, healthcare workers and humanitarian staff must be protected. Clearly marked medical and humanitarian vehicles must be spared from attacks.

Considering that they enrolled so many students that some are being deferred, this is the least they could do. Really they should probably hire more staff and give the current ones a pay rise

Huge. Huge testament to the power of organising. Huge relief for Exeter friends and colleagues. Huge waste of time and resources. Huge reputational damage done. Huge warning to universities who want to treat their staff like they don’t matter.

Great piece from my PGR colleague @zkadodz.bsky.social about the cuts, "A supervisor is not an abstract academic who can be replaced at a moment’s notice. My supervisors are the foundation of my whole project". Working with PhDs is SO central to academic life: they've not been considered at all 😧

Geologists and evolutionary biologists do not have to debate creationists. Astronomers do not have to debate pre-Copernican theories of the heavens. Doctors do not have to debate anti-vax nuts. Climate scientists do not have to debate industry-funded deniers. All that goes for racists times ten.

Too, the idea we should debate everything is usually proposed by those whose rights and humanity are not subject to debate. Debate amplifies and legitimizes false and abhorrent views plus it's a bullshit sport weaponized by the likes of Charlie Kirk, not a sound method of arriving at truth.

Another excellent example of just how incurious and limited the UK press has been about this crisis. Not one mention of the cuts to humanities that Bristol’s own VC is trying to push through at the moment in this article about her position on the cuts 🤔🙄. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

I am once again begging universities to realise that staff - academic, professional services, estates, all of them - are the product they are trying to sell. Without staff there is nothing to sell. No amount of flashy buildings will replace staff in universities. UKHE is in freefall.
