Watercolour and fineliner pen for Day 1 of #birdtober2026 There’s some variation in the colouring maybe due to subspecies variations. #birdtober #SciArt #birds #birdart #watercolour #painting #drawing #art #nature
A small painting in my sketchbook of a lilac-breasted roller. The top right is a watercolour painting of the bird’s head while the bottom left is the whole bird. Both have lilac upper breasts and turquoise lower chest and feathers stand up on the crown. The lower belly is turquoise and back had brown feathers and turquoise tail.

Watercolour painting of a Black Woodpecker for the @birdwhisperers.bsky.social September art challenge. Find dark feathers tricky to paint. #BirdWhisperer #birds #painting #art #artchallenge #sketch #drawing #nature
An A5 watercolour painting of a black woodpecker on a vertical tree trunk with a dark hole in the tree behind the woodpecker. The woodpecker has a blue sheen to the feathers. It has pale yellow eyes with almost a triangle shaped black pupil. It has dark wing feathers and a bright red crest. Its yellow beak is long and pointed at the end. The feet are a light colour with a hint of grey-purple shade. The background to the left of the tree trunk is pale blue with out of focus brown branches. The tree trunk is yellowish on the left side and a light pinkish brown on the right with dark holes in the bark and horizontal lines.

What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue) 🌍 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉
A photo of a small, plump songbird (9–10 cm / 3.5–4 in long) perched on a thin, thorny twig. It has an olive-green back, a pale grey belly, and a distinctive head pattern featuring a bright yellow and orange crown stripe bounded by bold black stripes, alongside a stark white stripe right over its eye.

Clue: Look closely at that fiery crown stripe and bold white eyebrow—this tiny royalty of the treetops is Europe's second-smallest bird!

Fun Fact: Despite weighing only about 5 to 7 grams (roughly the same as a single 20p coin or nickel!), this energetic little bird must eat almost constantly to survive, consuming high-protein spiders and tiny insects equal to its own body weight every day.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A quick sketch of a long tailed tit perched on a branch. It is a small bird with a short, dark beak with dark feathers around the eyes and on the nape as well as the wings. It has a long dark tail. On the belly are pink and orange/ochre feathers. I used black, pink and orange bic pens for the bird and green, black, purple and pink pens for the branch.

A close-up photo of a Little Grebe swimming peacefully on calm, murky green water. The bird is positioned in the centre of the frame, facing towards the left as viewed, and is captured from a slightly elevated side profile. Its compact, rounded body sits low in the water, and its damp, textured feathers are intricately detailed with tiny droplets of water. The bird's plumage is a soft gradient of brownish-grey tones. Its cheeks and throat are a lighter, warm buff-cream colour with a dark eye and a relatively short, pointed, dark bill with a touch of pale yellow/orange at the base and tip. The water surrounding the bird is a muted, brownish-green shade with gentle ripples radiating outward from its body and a soft reflection its head.

What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue) 🌎 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉
A close-up, profile photo of a relatively large bird (33 to 36 cm (about 13 to 14 in) long) perched on the edge of a light-coloured stone basin. The bird has a deep purplish-brown head, a striking orange-red eye, and a distinct patch of silvery-white, scale-like feathers on the side of its neck. Its wings and back are a mix of gray and brown feathers with pale edges, giving them a scalloped appearance.

Clue: This South American native looks like your everyday city pigeon went to a high-end salon. Look closely at those unique, silvery-white "scales" dressing up its neck!

Fun fact: Despite being a wild forest and farmland bird, it has actually expanded its territory massively into big cities over recent decades, adapting flawlessly to urban life just like its famous rock pigeon cousins.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

🪶 Good Morning Everybody, Happy Wednesday Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Raptors; any bird of prey Alt. is #Corvids; any member of the crow family. - A Buzzard on a dead tree in the rain - A curious Eurasian Jay in close up #birds #ECK #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdsofbluesky
A Common Buzzard perched on a dead tree in the pouring rain. The bird is right of centre of the shot, with its back turned to the camera but its head turned around to stare at it.
The bird has a brown head, paler around the bill, which is black and hooked. It has a yellow cere above the beak. Its back is a lightly mottled brown, darker as it gets to the tail.
The tree is fully dead with patches of bark missing along the trunk and branches. The trunk travels up along the right hand side of the frame and a horizontal branch, with multiple side branches, holds the buzzard. Another, smaller branch is jutting out above it.
The rain is heavy and large drops can be seen throughout the shot. It gives the shot a hazy appearance. The background is an out of focus wall of trees leaves. A Eurasian Jay in close up perched at the top of a small bush. The bird is centre of the shot, facing left so that it’s left side is visible.
It has its head raised in an alert pose and is glancing at the camera slightly. It has a thick black bill, white throat and crown, which is streaked with black and a prominent black steak from its beak to its shoulder. Its plumage is pinkish, with bright blue and white barring on the wing coverts, turning to black and white behind it.
Some barely visible, out of focus vegetation in the foreground gives a hazy effect to the birds feet and tail. It is perched on a bare branch, just visible at the bottom of the shot, which has a spur travelling upwards behind the bird to the right. A bush with small, oval green leaves is in the bottom left and the background is a white sky with some out of focus branches visible throughout.

ALTHOUGH the Heron is of a long, lank, auk- ward ſhape, yet its plumage gives it on the whole an agreeable appearance; but when ſtripped of itsThe Heron is defcribed by Buffon as exhibiting the picture of wretchedneſs, anxiety, and indigence, condemned to ſtruggle perpetually with mifery and want, and fickened by the reſtleſs cravings of a famiſhed appetite, &c. However faithful this in- genious naturaliſt may have been in pourtraying the appearance of the Heron, yet others are not in- clined to adopt his fentiments in defcribing its habits and manners, or to agree with him in opinion that it is one of the moſt wretched of animated beings. It is probable that it fuffers no more than other birds, many fpecies of which employ equal atten- tion in looking for their prey, and it is not un- likely that the Heron derives pleaſure from it in- ſtead of pain. A tiny Goldcrest perched on a slender branch, surrounded by lush green leaves. The bird’s delicate greyish-buff plumage is softly illuminated, with a vivid yellow-orange crown stripe catching the light. Its fine, pointed bill and large dark eye are clearly visible as it looks upward, while its fine feathers glow against the darker, softly blurred woodland background. The #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Elegant - any elegant looking bird. The alt is #Scruffy - any bird looking a bit worse for wear. I'm going with this elegant Western Grebe. #birds #nature #wildlife
A horizontal photo of a Western Grebe on calm water in soft morning light. The grebe is on the left, looking to the right, body slightly angled towards the camera. The bird has a bright white breast, neck, throat, and chin. The top of the head is black. The black extends down the back of the neck. The head feathers stand up, giving the bird a square buzz cut look. The back feathers are gray and wet from a recent dive.

The grebe has piercing red eyes. Only the right eye is visible. It has a long, pointed beak. The beak is pale orange. The top of the beak is dark, nearly black.

The scene is filled with soft morning light. Shades of pale pink and gold fill the scene. The water is still other than small ripples from the bird. The water appears pale blue.

Top left is a carved soft lino block of a kingfisher standing on a wooden post. The background has been carved away with only two birds although they look more like bats! Top left I printed an orange background first but the white lines didn’t show when I printed the front bit over it. Bottom right is my first print where I tried to use multiple colours at the same time. Bottom left I carved the background and just used black Ranger ink. There is a lot of chatter in the background.

Four Tufted Ducks on a calm lake, backlit by the golden sunset. The birds are largely in the centre of the shot, there are together to the left of centre and the fourth is to the right of them.
