OMG. 29 years ago I put an Easter egg in Duke Nukem 3D Mac, that replaced two of the in-game posters with pictures of a couple plush animals I had. I never told anyone other than my wife about the code (DNGLENDA) and completely forgot I did this. 1/2

Two screen shots from Duke Nukem 3D showing a pixelated bunny and cow in the game.

Anime art on a a IIGS??? That’s surprising. Any idea what the original source is? Like a specific fan art collection or something?

In 1980, Intel introduced the 8087 floating-point coprocessor chip. Plugging this chip into your IBM PC made math 100 times faster, good for CAD and spreadsheets. I opened up the chip to reverse-engineer exactly how it does complicated calculations. Let's take a look inside...

The integrated circuit is a black ceramic rectangle with 40 metal pins sticking out, in two rows. (This is known as a DIP, a Dual Inline Package.) It has three rows of text: "D8087-1", a cryptic version label, and then the copyright line with a big lower-case I, INTEL m c 1980 1984. The m and c are in circles for the mask-work symbol and the copyright symbol. The chip has a small semicircular notch on the left side, indicating its orientation. The package consists of two thin ceramic layers, bonded together with a gray substance; the metal pins stick out from this gray substance. The ceramic package is important to me because tapping the gray layer with a chisel will cause the two layers to separate, revealing the silicon die inside. In contrast, most chips are in epoxy packages, which are very difficult to open, usually requiring strong acids.

Compared to Amazon and Target, Walmart has been better about shipping amiibo in boxes for me. They *usually* use boxes, but I’ve still had them use bags once or twice. That’s just my experience though.

ANYWAY i was idly wondering if Travellers' Tales did some stupid nonsense in Toy Story to get more colors out of the system and of course they did. three 16-color layers and shadow/highlight are all combined to form the final image (left side is the raw colors without shadow/highlight)

I tried to think of a polite response, but the best I can muster is “The last person who worked on this was clearly in over their head.” I’m sure you’ll fix it, but dang! That area is more of a rebuild than a repair at this point!

Didn’t have one in the 80s but I’ve had one for several years now. Great machine! The extra RAM is neat but very few programs require it. Mostly modern stuff. IMO the main benefit of the 130XE is s-video support out-of-the-box. 800XL can do s-video too, but it requires a (simple) mod to enable it.

Have you ever seen a Sega of America refurb sticker? Now you have! This came with a Nomad I bought second-hand so I’m not sure if the sticker was originally on the console or if it was always on the manual, but I like the implication that the manual was ‘reconditioned’ and ‘100% tested’ by SoA.

When you want to fit a DIP in a footprint meant for an SOIC

A DIP chip in a socket, which has been connected to footprint on a PCB meant for a much smaller chip using a pair of ribbon cables. This makes the socket float above the board.
