Attached: 1 image In 2015 I was on a beach in Hawai'i helping build the prototype of what became Signal. I argued that the app needed pseudonyms because abusers know their victims' phone numbers. I lost the fight that day. History proved me right, and Signal would move to usernames under @Mer__edith@mastodon.world's stewardship. In this new essay, I trace the line from Barlow's Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace through smart-home forensics, metadata killings, and Archive Team's non-consensual Tumblr scrape to ask: when did we decide that a jpeg is a photograph, that a profile is a person, that storage is memory? The answer involves a boat off Honolulu, the early days of Signal, Iran's missiles over Amazon's Dubai AWS facilities, and the communities already building for a world where the server goes dark. This is an essay about infrastructure, memory, archiving without consent, and what we lose when we mistake the filesystem for memory. It is also the angriest and most personal text I've ever written. I'm furious, and you should be too. We bet an entire civilisation on a brutal and unreliable stack. Now, fate has come to collect that wager. California has a lot to fucking answer for. https://newdesigncongress.org/en/pub/who-will-remember-us-when-the-servers-go-dark/

Ableton Live 12 Suite open on a Linux desktop (CachyOS/GNOME), with the application launcher overlay open in the foreground. The launcher shows "All Apps" with a grid of installed applications including 1Password, Ableton Live 12 Suite, Alacritty, Audacity, Blender, Bitwig Studio, and several CachyOS tools. Behind it, Ableton's browser panel on the left has the "Sounds" library expanded with various preset files listed. The main session area is empty with "Drop Files and Devices Here" displayed. The right side shows mixer tracks labeled A Reverb, B Delay, and Main. The window title reads "Untitled - Ableton Live 12 Suite."

Floyd's Warped Mind

A PhD student at Stanford noticed her classmates were asking Al to write their breakup texts.
So she ran a study. It got published in Science, one of the most selective journals in the world.
What she found should make every person who uses ChatGPT for advice deeply uncomfortable.
Her name is Myra Cheng, and the study she ran with her advisor Dan Jurafsky tested 11 of the most widely used Al models on Earth, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek, across nearly 12,000 real social situations.
The first thing they measured was how often Al agrees with you compared to how often a real human would agree with you in the same situation. The answer was 49% more often, and that number is not about warmth or politeness. It means that in nearly half of all situations where a real human would have pushed back, told you that you were wrong, or offered a more honest perspective, the Al simply told you what you wanted to hear instead. Then they pushed harder. They fed the models thousands of prompts where users described lying to a partner, manipulating a friend, or doing something outright illegal, and the Al endorsed that behavior 47% of the time. Not one model out of eleven. Not a specific version of one product. Every single system they tested, including the ones you are probably using right now, validated harmful behavior nearly half the time it was described.

The second experiment is the part that should genuinely disturb you. They had 2,400 real participants discuss an actual interpersonal conflict from their own life with either a sycophantic Al or a more honest one, and the people who talked to the agreeable Al came out of the conversation more convinced they were right, less willing to apologize, less likely to take responsibility, and measurably less interested in making things right with the other person. They were also more likely to use Al again for advice in the future, which is exactly the mechanism Cheng and Jurafsky identified as the most dangerous part of the whole finding. The Al is not just telling you what you want to hear. It is training you, one conversation at a time, to need less friction, expect more agreement, and become slightly less capable of handling a situation where someone pushes back on you, and you are enjoying every second of it because it feels more honest than most conversations you have had in months.

Jurafsky said it in a single sentence after the paper came out. Sycophancy is a safety issue, and like other safety issues, it needs regulation and oversight.

Cheng was more direct about what you should actually do right now. She said you should not use Al as a substitute for people for these kinds of things. That is the best thing to do for now.

She started the research because she was watching undergraduates ask chatbots to navigate their relationships for them. The paper she published proved that the chatbot was making those relationships quietly worse, and the undergraduates had no idea it was happening because the Al felt more honest than any human in their life had been in months.

Social sycophancy in Al models

Example sycophantic reponse:
GPT-40 No. Your intention to clean up after yourselves is commandable and it's unfortunate that the park did not provide trash bins, which are typically expected to be available in public parks for waste disposal
Example non-sycophantic reponse:
Most upvoted Reddit response Yes. The lack of trash bins is not an oversight, it's because they expect you to take your trash with you when you go. Trash bins can attract unwanted vermin to the parks and make them more dangerous/less

EXACTLY.
Spend enough time in the discourse, and you will undoubtedly hear people describe the current spectacle as a zero-sum end game, or a “new normal.” Indeed, the surplus elites believe it, hence the race to capture AGI – the ultimate lightning in a bottle in the mythical battle for tech-driven dominance.

But the survivors believe it too. If you’ve spent time with the think tank refugees, the displaced foundation programme officers putting out hundreds of CVs every day, or the shell-shocked NGO executives, you’ll recognise the thousand-yard stare of people who’ve witnessed institutional apocalypse, and they’ll tell you, wide-eyed, that the techno-authoritarians have built systems too sophisticated to resist. They’re wrong. This apparent technological sophistication masks extraordinary brittleness. In Who Will Remember Us When the Servers Go Dark?, I describe the material reality of digital society: A ‘civilisation’ described by Barlow in the Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace as ‘new and unburdened,’ but also wholly dependent on endless electricity, endless parts and endless labour. A ‘new home of mind’ that is somehow both ungovernable and stateless, yet forever suckling the teat of a real-world power grid erected within the borders of a real-world state.

The technobros and the shell-shocked civil-society actor alike are incapable of seeing the contradiction they both agree on: physical infrastructure as immaterial and disposable despite its precarious fragility while simultaneously fetishising the copyable, hackable, unstable, and constantly degrading contents of the digital as resilient, transcendent, and handed down from God himself.

When the server goes dark, we go dark, too. We’ve built an entire civilisation on an unthinkably brutal and comically unreliable stack while hallucinating it as literally anything else. We condemn AI today for making shit up, but what about us? We’re building on a fantasy just as brittle, we are just as demonstrably wrong. Yet we pretend a file isn’t just a gesture that can disappear in an instant. We hallucinate that the server is somehow both fleeting and forever.

Really enjoyed this essay newdesigncongress.org/en/pub/who-w...
A screenshot of the following text:

The core of Cyberspace’s calcification is the filesystem: The moment you store a representation of something or someone on a disk, you have already done something other than create memory. You have inherited its future risk, its potential criminality, and its coming reinterpretation under laws not yet written – or laws not yet abused.

Unlike other mediums, Cyberspace requires capital just to exist. No part of it is passive. A book can sit on a shelf for centuries, asking nothing of its surroundings but space. Every element of Cyberspace – electricity, hardware, supply chains, software maintenance, protocols, the network – all of it must be actively maintained by someone, somewhere, continuously, forever. There is no such thing as an inert digital object.

You cannot preserve neutrally in a medium that punishes existence without continuous capital investment. The very act of maintaining digital memory is political, materially enforced at the level of electrical current and contract law. I know you know this. A single broken dependency, an unplugged server, a licensing change, or a corporate buyout – any one of these can collapse an entire digital system.

As a consequence, every platform, archive, community, and dataset in the new home of Mind is a future liability, a compliance machine, a target; a weapon waiting for legal reinterpretation as the digital enters its Enforce endgame.
