As exciting as a lucky dice roll can be in a story-heavy game, they often feel like a vestigial holdover from TTRPGs, where the abstraction of dice for social/story checks is necessary to keep events flowing forward. There also isn't savescumming in TTRPGs. Players have to adapt to a bad roll...

i knew i'd love Scarlet Hollow after adoring Slay the Princess and hot damn does ep 1 show that it's gonna be an incredible ride, the branching systems are visibly unbelievably complex already, even more so than StP even just in a single episode. can't wait to play more.

Kaneeka is SO GOOD. Usually I play visual novels and there's only one character I'm into. In Scarlet Hollow, you're spoiled for choice. Everyone is SO good, and interesting, and well-written they're all worth their own playthrough.

We’re not messing around with the whole choices matter thing. Each playthrough of Scarlet Hollow is going to be different in big ways. The same underlying narrative structure, but told from a fresh perspective. Some characters might not be recognizable to you because of how your choices shape them

I've been playing Slay The Princess and it's absolutely incredible it took a while to understand what's going on and what the game is actually trying to say, but fuck, it really hits it benefits a lot from repeated playthroughs and seeing all the scenes it has to offer

A popular sentiment I’ve observed consistently in discussions regarding institutional support for videogame making is the lamenting of key people in relevant decision making positions not caring about videogames because they:

Haven’t worked in the videogames industry in any capacity, and/or

Haven’t made a videogame in any capacity, and/or

Don’t play videogames.

I find this a little puzzling, and frankly a little alarming. I genuinely do not think working in “the industry” or being a base-level consumer of videogames would necessarily translate to making decisions that help a given creative scene actually flourish as a cultural ecosystem in “the Arts”, beyond the profit-first framing of “industry”.
