Repurposing mission debris | Is space debris left behind on other planets and moons just waste, or can it be repurposed as a scientifically viable experiment? We asked ourselves that question in a recent study in @agu.org Geophysical Research Letters. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

We got clouded out of the partial maximum, but we were at least treated to some sundogs at the start. Mr Son had better luck further up North (4th photo).

Digital painting of the Three Forks area of Jezero Crater, with the rover's tracks visible.

Cliché but appropriate Spanish poem by Antonio Machado:
"Caminante, son tus huellas
el camino y nada más;
Caminante, no hay camino,
se hace camino al andar.
Al andar se hace el camino,
y al volver la vista atrás
se ve la senda que nunca
se ha de volver a pisar.
Caminante, no hay camino
sino estelas en la mar."

Mine was only a proof of concept, so I'm glad someone at NASA made a more refined version. Their version apparently fuses more streams of telemetry to represent the true rover position at very small intervals, while mine was limited to only the Navcam image locations that were interpolated.

To sum up iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3... - the initial spacecraft astrometry of 3I/ATLAS substantially improves its orbit determination - this helped show that 3I/ATLAS has a significant non-gravitational acceleration & - indicates 3I is significantly less massive than originally supposed.

After poking around and finding the base of the flow, the story became much richer: the basalt had flowed over some eolian dunes which sourced the water for the hydrothermal system. The sand might have accumulated as obstacle dunes around a bedrock hill, then buried by the flow in a valley. (2/2)

The dune deposits are light orange-brown and characterized by wind ripple/translatent (pin-stripe) laminations, and the basalt is very dark reddish brown. the contact is very sharp. The IAU announced official names for Donaldjohanson's surface & shape features 2 weeks ago, but nobody has mentioned the news. They're all named after archeological sites and hominin fossils, which is fun and awesome haha (Afar Lobus = small lobe, Olduvai Lobus = big lobe, Windover Collum = neck)

Impromptu #ArtAdventCalendar, yesterday's phone photo op while on an evening run
Night phone snap from a high pedestrian bridge over a wide river. The bright undefined blob of an almost full Moon at the mid top, pierced by a contrail running from right to left, shines over the river. Illuminated clouds enhance but don't obstruct the view. The street lightning on the banks gives yellow/green tones. The sky and trees are reflected in the calm, dark wide waters.
