It's this stuff that has me so confused by people calling TLJ some kind of hate letter/anti-Star Wars story because Luke drank some blue milk or whatever. This is a GREAT Star Wars story! How can you not dig where this was going??

I'm of the opinion that redeeming him was the biggest mistake of the entire sequel trilogy The ENTIRE MESSAGE of his role in the first two entries was that he rejected every attempt at redemption and doubled down on being a massive piece of shit Embrace that! He doesn't get a good ending!

This was a tweet from Michael Hobbes a while back and I’ve seen nothing to contradict it yet: “I think we'll look back on the last decade as a time when social media gave previously marginalized groups the ability to speak directly to elites and, as a result, elites lost their minds.”

I am so so tired of speculative investment driving the tech/business agenda. This is about the 4th major round in my professional lifetime of unsustainable nonsense taking up all the oxygen and leaving a trail of wreckage.

I think you may have misread what I posted. I didn't suggest this was a "lesson" for him. I was responding to the suggestion that "adapting" could somehow make someone not who they used to be. He's never going to not be the person he was in college. That's always going to be there, mixed in.

You would think the "Olympic" part would clue people in on how they absolutely do not have a chance. If I were offered the chance to race an Olympic sprinter I'd probably take it, but only for the opportunity to see exactly how badly I'd get smoked. That sounds like fun. xD

I'm not sure that's true, though it also often isn't an option. For instance, a murderer probably won't have the opportunity to build up an audience for their video essays as they're unlikely to have a penalty as light as a school suspension for it.

I don't know either way on this specific person. That isn't really relevant to the larger point of it being a problem for anyone who did that to someone to decide on a highly visible career path. For some it might not matter; for others it might be very harmful. It seems like a pretty bad idea.

He did make great content. But I can see that while also seeing how having his face show up in a widespread fashion is potentially very painful, even harmful, to someone traumatized by seeing him. So I get the idea behind saying that's an inappropriate career path. Is that correct? 🤷‍♀️

The argument for not allowing trans children in sports ignores all the reasons we would like a young person to benefit from socializing with their peers *on purpose* because not allowing a young trans person to generate a healthy peer group *is the point* but they can’t say that part aloud.

I wish it weren't the case that India's social media userbase is stuck on Twitter (and Meta platforms), but there's no denying that the existent non-mainstream information infra that was built up there despite the IT cell & censorship is still very much hanging on despite even further repression.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

The left isn’t weak because of infighting. The left is weak because every facet of our society and economy is geared to the benefit of fascism and white supremacy and it is the challenge of multiple lifetimes to dismantle all of that.

Vibecoding destroys this shared culture of hackers, producing people who legitimately can no longer perceive that Enterprise Hello World is a joke, who no longer have the mental skills to map out a JAPH to figure out what it does, or to catch an underhanded exploit.

These jokes and pranks and competitions were all based around the idea that code can be arbitrarily clever, arbitrarily inscrutable, that lines of code is a completely worthless metric, etc. Every programmer was literate enough to *perceive there as jokes*.

They were amusing precisely because of how hard you'd sometimes have to think to figure out what the fuck the code was doing. It was a caricature of bad code, code that you'd get fired or just yelled at for trying to submit. Even though it did look like normal Perl.

Back in the 90's there was a common programming joke of doing Enterprise Hello World. Hello World is the first program you write in a language, the simplest. Usually it's like, print "hello world" Enterprise Hello World turns this into thousands of lines of over engineered bullshit. As a joke.

Just like how if you AI generated a novel you'd get something that resembles a novel but has a loose or nonexistent structure and that fails to cohere into a work of art, so too is this true of AI code. The difference is that we tend to review code by its output and not its form.

I really need to make it clear to folks that AI-generated code closely resembles AI-generated text, by which I mean it is syntactically correct, easy to produce, and can approach what a human can make, but very clearly lacks the forethought and holistic nature of when a skilled human makes it.
