today's essential read for all Canadians. "the government’s huge subsidization of this project – up to 90 % of a $40B pipeline with ownership split evenly between Ottawa and Edmonton – lays bare a reality unfolding across the world economy: FFs aren’t just losing to clean energy. They’ve lost."
theglobeandmail.com
Is it really a good idea for the government to subsidize a pipeline?
Designating the West Coast pipeline as a project of national interest exposes a global reality: Fossil fuels haven’t just lost to clean energy – they’ve already lost

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Important. I'm not sure what will change without asking why the system has tolerated >30% of students not meeting its own outcomes year after year, decade after decade. It can turn into generations. There's a strong expectation that bureaucratic wheels turn. I'd like to see more transparency.

I’m listening to a program about AI in schools and thinking about how hard my kid’s school and school board have fought the most basic concerns about programming, equity, safety, and ethics. It’s a whole other reason to fear their rush to integrate AI:

Lake Ontario's name comes from the Wyandot word Ontarí'io, which is typically translated as "beautiful lake". The Kanienʼkéha called it Katarokwi. Samuel de Champlain called it Lac de St. Louis. The name Lacus Ontario was first recorded in 1660 by Francis Creuxius.

Yes. In Nova Scotia, Public Health is very quiet on Covid prevention - including Health Canada's recommendation to improve ventilation. It seems worth noting as children prepare for yet another school year with no plan in place to monitor their indoor air quality and make improvements as necessary

What about this does Carney not understand? “impact assessments are not red tape. Their entire purpose is to prevent irreversible harm. Circumventing the process, or allowing shovels in the ground before the risks are understood, is misguided and a gamble with our collective future.”

HRCE tells us - students, staff, families - they will "listen to lead." Top ask seems to be smaller class sizes for lots of reasonable-sounding reasons. This is the last day to look at comments.
The image is a screenshot of the key word results from HRCE's 2026 Listen to Lead survey. The two most frequently used words are "sizes" and "smaller."

In the face of the change to LPC direction on climate policy, this is disappointing. The gov't needs voices spotlighting the climate crisis. Help the Climate Caucus be heard, sit as an independent, cross to a party willing to stand for the environment. Canada can't afford to bleed progressive MPs.

Imo the best coaching model we had was significant release time for strong math and language teachers in each school. They were supported by consultants, developed school-level goals, knew the students, worked directly with colleagues. But to make what works best work at all, we need more teachers.

HRCE librarians still in limbo on funding question.
About six weeks ago, school librarians across HRM were shocked by a rather random declaration by Education minister Brendan Maguire. In a social media post that has since been deleted, Maguire announced in no uncertain terms that Halifax City council was pulling funding from HRCE school libraries, putting almost 100 school librarian jobs on jeopardy. It may seem odd that a Provincial Minister was commenting on a Halifax City council funding issue that impacted HRCE.
