As far as I'm concerned, this is a point of no return for journalism in Nova Scotia. The moment throwing out reporters becomes normalized, is the moment we accept that we don't need the powerful to answer questions they don't want to have asked. We cannot let this go unanswered.

Ah, it was only a decision to not repair our '07 Outback. I think we'll try over the winter with bus, walking, Uber, and Communauto and see how we do. We're in a pretty great location to try!

Adjusting to life without a car. Thinking every car trip is kind of the same? At the bus stop today, a man stood on the other side of the street for the longest time giving me the finger. Later, a woman maybe from Syria sat beside me and told me about her day and we had a truly lovely conversation

Houston is buds with Trump-supporting U.S.-based billionaire Trent Vichie, and so Nova Scotians will (supposedly) get a data centre foisted upon them.

Sam can weigh pros & cons, & come to that conclusion from his position of wealth, privilege, & safety. The rest of us can also weigh pros & cons, & come to our own conclusions. I, for instance, like to consider the consequences for the most vulnerable among us & the motives of those who push AI.

And because the adult population was generally immune, the risk to others was much lower then. Certainly it's very different now. I mostly see the pre-vaccine moms who did this as just trying to be good moms. I'd be interested to know what advice they had from their GPs.

When I was little, I was invited next door to try to infect the neighbour's daughter. Her mom was specifically concerned about her ability to have babies. It was weird for me. But I kind of get it. Pre-vaccine moms couldn't control infection so they tried to control the timing to mitigate risks.

today's essential read for all Canadians. "the government’s huge subsidization of this project – up to 90 % of a $40B pipeline with ownership split evenly between Ottawa and Edmonton – lays bare a reality unfolding across the world economy: FFs aren’t just losing to clean energy. They’ve lost."
theglobeandmail.com
Is it really a good idea for the government to subsidize a pipeline?
Designating the West Coast pipeline as a project of national interest exposes a global reality: Fossil fuels haven’t just lost to clean energy – they’ve already lost

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Important. I'm not sure what will change without asking why the system has tolerated >30% of students not meeting its own outcomes year after year, decade after decade. It can turn into generations. There's a strong expectation that bureaucratic wheels turn. I'd like to see more transparency.

REcommendation: AB’s health + OHS must adopt the precautionary principle when responding to new respiratory illnesses. It should require employers to provide the strongest possible safeguards for employee health until there is greater certainty about the transmission of a new respiratory virus.

Lake Ontario's name comes from the Wyandot word Ontarí'io, which is typically translated as "beautiful lake". The Kanienʼkéha called it Katarokwi. Samuel de Champlain called it Lac de St. Louis. The name Lacus Ontario was first recorded in 1660 by Francis Creuxius.

Yes. In Nova Scotia, Public Health is very quiet on Covid prevention - including Health Canada's recommendation to improve ventilation. It seems worth noting as children prepare for yet another school year with no plan in place to monitor their indoor air quality and make improvements as necessary

HRCE tells us - students, staff, families - they will "listen to lead." Top ask seems to be smaller class sizes for lots of reasonable-sounding reasons. This is the last day to look at comments.
The image is a screenshot of the key word results from HRCE's 2026 Listen to Lead survey. The two most frequently used words are "sizes" and "smaller."

In the face of the change to LPC direction on climate policy, this is disappointing. The gov't needs voices spotlighting the climate crisis. Help the Climate Caucus be heard, sit as an independent, cross to a party willing to stand for the environment. Canada can't afford to bleed progressive MPs.

Imo the best coaching model we had was significant release time for strong math and language teachers in each school. They were supported by consultants, developed school-level goals, knew the students, worked directly with colleagues. But to make what works best work at all, we need more teachers.
