R1 research universities should be ashamed. Most have simply caved to “following state laws” or whatever crap excuses they come up with, while people in institutions with so much to lose are publicly taking on this regime.

Ladies and gentlemen, Marc Maron.
@marcmaron 3d marc maron wtfpod.com/dispatches/the... The anti-woke flank of the new fascism is being driven almost exclusively by comics, my peers. Whether or not they are self-serving or true believers in the new fascism is unimportant. They are of the movement. Whether they see themselves as acolytes or just comics doesn't matter. Whether they are driven by the idea that what they are fighting for is a free speech issue or whether they are truly morally bankrupt racists doesn't matter. They are part of the public face of a fascist political movement that seeks to destroy the democratic idea. When comedians with podcasts have shameless, self-proclaimed white supremacists and fascists on their show to joke around like they are just entertainers or even just politicians, all it does is humanize and normalize fascism. When someone uses their platform for that reason they are facilitating anti-American sentiment and promoting violent autocracy.

i've been thinking lately about the loss of the future--not in the historical sense, because the future just keeps on coming--but the loss of the future in the ideological sense, the loss of the future as an organizing principle of politics this is as true of liberals as it is of the left

Depends on department protocols in my experience—generally, it shouldn’t be an issue especially for a prof/course topic not relevant to your dissertation. Some depts might drive a harder limit on this. The person to clarify this is your DGS, who should be transparent about your particular situation.

The Vanishing Culture report arrives today at a critical moment: While Internet Archive recovers from a cyberattack, it’s a reminder of how fragile our access to knowledge can be. Preserving culture & history requires resilience—and collective action. 🔗 blog.archive.org/2024/10/30/v...
Alt: The image shows the cover of the Internet Archive's Vanishing Culture report. On the left, the words "Vanishing Culture" are prominently displayed in bold, dark font against a neutral background. To the right, a set of cultural artifacts including a VHS tape, an open book, a film reel, a vinyl record, and a web link icon appear to disintegrate into pixels, symbolizing the disappearance of analog and digital media. Below these icons is a pixelated computer hand cursor pointing to the word "SAVE," emphasizing the need for preservation. The Internet Archive's logo is placed in the bottom-right corner.

…the career, promotions, future opportunities. Material urgencies can blunt how we’d like to be intellectually engaged more often than academics like to admit. I realize this 3 years out of the Ph.D. & with some breathing room. It’s a sacrifice, I cant deny anxiety, but it’s also a kind of freedom.

Being contingent is so much about this material existence involving pay, tenure, visas, fungibility, but being contingent is also a reminder that your thinking isn’t set in stone, & the community/ies you’re inside AND outside of can reshape & refocus your analytics in new directions not wedded to

Of course I’m framing it as a benefit when it’s not intended to be one. But as much as academia can be where collaborative thinking feeds intellect it can block it off into silos & cliques where rigor & meticulousness disappear. I say it knowing all the attendant problems with ideas like “rigor.”

One of the benefits of being non-tenured & having little support for thinking, writing, publishing is feeling completely out of the loop with trending conversations in my field(s) of study. Leaves me free to think with people I’m far more aligned with on the fringes/outside academia.
