Maybe it's because I'm a third child, but I find this argument bizarre. Who knows how well off they'll be in 15 years? Maybe you'll lose your job. Maybe a parent will need care. Maybe Liz Truss will double your mortgage costs. And maybe you'll make bad choices. But that's hardly the child's fault.
Extract from article in The Sunday Times by Jason Cowley: "McSweeney, who insists Labour must always put country before party, has long opposed extending benefits such as universal credit to third and subsequent children. So too does Jo White, the influential MP for Bassetlaw and chair of the red wall caucus. “Lifting the cap would be a retrograde step,” she said. “The benefit system is there to support people when they’re at their greatest need and should be there throughout life if needed, but the focus has to be on people working and putting a wage on the table and raising aspirations and opportunities through doing that. Having more children is a choice that you should make when the finances allow you to do so. If there’s a system that allows you to keep on having children, then it enables you to remain on benefits for years and years.”" These words highlighted: "Having more children is a choice that you should make when the finances allow you to do so". Rita's argument was always a formidable and persuasive one that could be admired without reservation, even despite being sure it was ultimately mistaken. Dorothy's reply, as always, captures that perfectly.

Just read 'Which Child'. It simultaneously closes the debate forever and opens it forever by showing more clearly than I've ever seen before what Dunnett intended and then arguing that authorial intentions don't matter.

#dunnett #dunnettcontent #historicalfiction #earlymodern Our weekly #dunnettquote is dining with the Knights in the Auberge de France in Birgu.
"... In search of enlightenment, Jerott Blyth attached himself with great firmness that evening to the party which went to dine, after the Council meeting broke up, in the Auberge de France. As well as Lymond, Villegagnon was there, and Graham Mallett, with Nicholas Upton, the Turopilier, refugee from non-existent English Langue.

For the sake of coolness the meal was served in the courtyard, visible through the crested doorway, its barrel arch lozenged in colour. For sixty scudi a year, the Pilier could clearly serve his knight's hunger most handsomely. ..."

We are at the point in history where Germany is having to lecture the US on the need to fight fascism.
A post by Marco Rubio attacking Germany for tackling the alt right extremism of the AfD.
The German foreign office responds.

Rubio’s posts says:

Germany just gave its spy agency new powers to surveil the opposition. That's not democracy—it's tyranny in disguise.
What is truly extremist is not the popular AfD-which took second in the recent election—but rather the establishment's deadly open border immigration policies that the AfD opposes.
Germany should reverse course.

The German foreign office responds with:

This is democracy. This decision is the result of a thorough & independent investigation to protect our Constitution & the rule of law. It is independent courts that will have the final say.
We have learnt from our history that rightwing extremism needs to be stopped.

How could we phrase this so it is up to date with modern findings & respectful of neurodevelopmental differences? Try this: "Autistic people have differences in social communication skills, & may use repeated movement, sound or interests to enable thriving. We look at how those differences happen".

"Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social interaction and repetitive behaviors. A key characteristic of ASD is a decreased interest in social interactions, which affects individuals' ability to engage with their social environment. This study explores the neurobiological basis of these social deficits.."
