Saturday: Celebrate new Raging River mountain bike trails near Snoqualmie and North Bend
Photo from Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance. After more than a decade of planning and work, Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance is ready to celebrate the opening of the new Raging River trails near Snoqualmie and North Bend. Join them and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday (October 10) for a day of music, food and, of course, mountain biking. The trails are on land that the DNR purchased in 2009. Part of the Issaquah Alps, it's across SR-18 from Tiger Mountain and its long-popular mountain bike trails.

One takeaway from tonight: just one Bellevue CM (Jared Nieuwenhuis) thinks that the city spending 29% of new transportation revenue on pedestrian and bike infrastructure is too much.

Huge thank you to the @transportation.seattle.gov team, to the community orgs and volunteers, and the consultant folks who put on this event. South Park has so much potential and it’s very cool to meet many of the folks working together on projects to make our region better!

Even post-Kemper, Kemper Development is still basically just Kemper. "Lower demand infrastructure" actually means "infrastructure for lower-demand people" www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...
Last week I wrote about a comment made by Kemper Freeman Jr., who was comparing people who shop at Southcenter with the folks who shop at his mall, Bellevue Square.

Freeman was quoted in a newspaper story saying, “When you walk through the [Southcenter] mall, the way the customer dresses just to shop there — the light blue and pink hair curlers, the shoes that flop, flop, flop along — it’s a completely different customer.”

This is nuts. @murray.senate.gov: “Tying funding for transit projects to marriage rates and how many babies a woman has is the sort of bizarre and dystopian idea you’d expect in a TV show, not actual policy put forth by the U.S. government — yet here we are."

These streets have never worked for area residents. In 1954, a group of Pinehurst dads went out to 5th Ave NE with garden tools and created a path between 125th and 130th so their kids could walk to school safe from traffic.

While it makes a lot of sense to talk about why Pinehurst Station is a not a good transit station location today, let's look at why the area is the way it is. It was initially developed in the 1930s, a time with some of our worst traffic engineering crimes. Then WA dug the I-5 trench.

Building I-5 left many scars in the Pinehurst neighborhood, new walking and biking projects hope to heal some of them
Opening Day September 30, 2026. The new Pinehurst Station has a horrible walkshed with very few destinations or homes within a 5-minute walk of the station entrance. This point has been made well, and there are efforts to allow more housing near the station, including in the golf course. Rather than rehash those points, it's worth looking at how the area go to be the way that it is and what the city is doing to help heal old transportation wounds by reconnecting neighborhoods with better walking and biking options.

Hopefully the paid parking @transportation.seattle.gov is planning for Queen Anne Ave can pay for real bike lanes, because I was almost seriously injured 10 min ago when someone pulled into the painted bike lane (blocking the car lane and bike lane both) without any signaling. We deserve safer.

The lowest price seats on Alaska don’t have seat assignments. Is there an option to get those and still get to sit with your kid? I’ve done it where I asked the gate person and they got us seats together, but I think that annoying for them.

Official traffic study estimate is 22,000 vehicles per day, so about 8M per year. However, I'm not sure if this includes all the bikes. It should at least include people who bike across the bridge deck since they would cross the rubber tube thingy.

Hard to compare these since Portland has more bridge options that are located closer to downtown. Last I checked the Hawthorne Bridge gets a lot more, though it looks like the counter website isn't working so I don't know the exact #

Last year, the bridge didn’t reach the 1M mark until mid-December. The previous record year, 2019, didn’t reach 1M until the later half of October. Only four years have ever reached 1M since counting began 14 years ago. September also became the 4th month in a row to set the all-time monthly record.

We just hit 1 million Fremont Bridge bike trips so far this year
Data through September 29. Sometime Monday evening (September 28), somebody rolled across the Fremont Bridge and registered the one millionth bike or scooter trip so far this year. The old bike counter display had both a daily count and a thermometer-style counter that filled up over the course of the year. That thermometer maxed out at one million. When the city first installed the counter with sponsorship from Cascade Bicycle Club, one million was seen as an aspirational number. Seattle just hit that figure before October. Last year, the bridge didn't reach the 1 million mark until mid-December.

Angry neighbors may have accomplished something that years of advocacy could not: Reducing the minimum fire lane from 20 feet to 12 feet. This has been approved by the fire department and SDOT's Transportation Operations Division. My source at SDOT says this is a precedent.

A Week Without Driving starts October 1 + Watch me talking about my no-biking challenge from last year
From the Week Without Driving website. Week Without Driving 2026 runs October 1–8, challenging people to do exactly what it says on the tin: Go an entire week without driving a car. It's an enlightening experience for individuals, but it is especially powerful when decision makers participate. Too many people in charge of transportation and even transit decisions do not know firsthand what it is like to rely on biking, walking and/or transit to get through the normal tasks of daily life. About one third of people in the U.S.

When Seattle transit advocates successfully fought against the cap on the city's share of a pass-through on the new countywide 0.1% sales tax this summer...that resulted in a $4.7 million annual contribution to SDOT's budget that is now preventing cuts to urban forestry & bridge maintenance.

SDOT finishes design on 1st Ave NE trail connecting Pinehurst Station and James Baldwin Elementary
From the project webpage. Like many streets in the north and south ends of Seattle, 1st Ave NE does not have continuous sidewalks. Though it won't be ready before the opening of Pinehurst Station in two days (September 30), SDOT has finished design on a new 12-foot-wide biking and walking trail between NE 130th Street and James Baldwin Elementary School at NE 120th Street. City Light will be moving utility poles soon, then construction on the trail will begin in early 2027. The path should be open in late summer or fall 2027.
