These streets have never worked for area residents. In 1954, a group of Pinehurst dads went out to 5th Ave NE with garden tools and created a path between 125th and 130th so their kids could walk to school safe from traffic.

While it makes a lot of sense to talk about why Pinehurst Station is a not a good transit station location today, let's look at why the area is the way it is. It was initially developed in the 1930s, a time with some of our worst traffic engineering crimes. Then WA dug the I-5 trench.

When complete in late summer/fall 2027 the trail will help a lot more people access Pinehurst Station, which has a terrible walkshed due to a vicious freeway and golf course combo.

Hmm, Seattle looks a bit off in this ORCA ad. Our public transit agencies wouldn’t disrespect our artists and our city by using AI for their ads, right?

My dream is that King County Metro adds the planned Lake City-Nothgate-Green Lake-Latona-U District route (numbered 1994 in their expansion plan), and that Seattle redesigns 50th to serve both biking and this new bus route along with safer crosswalks to access the new bus stops.

Aerial view shows about 48 car parking spots here usually. But multi-floor garages need space for the ramps and pillars and such, so you could maybe cram like 30-something spots per floor in a hypothetical garage on this lot.

Someone called the cops on kids riding gas minibikes on the sidewalks, and a cop hit a 13-year-old with their police cruiser. An excerpt:
J.F. and his friend reportedly were driving their gas-powered minibikes, both wearing helmets, at speeds of up to 30 mph around the Mill Creek Town Center. Someone called police, and the incident was delivered on police computer-assisted dispatch terminals as a “nuisance” and officers were sent to the scene, according to the complaint.

Over the next several minutes, officers spotted the youths and “shadowed” them. The officers reported the boys were “revving their engines” and going onto sidewalks.

However, a senior supervisor instructed the officers, “Obviously don’t pursue,” because the kids were not suspected of any serious crimes, were not armed and were not endangering the public. The officers were told not to activate their emergency equipment.

Despite these instructions, the complaint alleges Officer Joseph Odom “drove his marked patrol SUV in pursuit of J.F.”

A witness walking his dog said J.F was driving about 30 mph and that Odom’s SUV overtook him from behind “then steered his Patrol SUV sharply left across the crosswalk and into J.F.’s path of travel, leaving J.F no room to maneuver.”

The boy’s minibike collided with the driver’s side front fender, throwing him from the cycle and into the street.

I do, however, give a fuck about Bicycle Sundays Co-Founder Mia Mann's 1967 intentions for Lake Washington Boulevard (her proposed Council resolution text, which I don't believe ever got passed):

Text copied from image

A RESOLUTION:

CONGERNING THE IMPLEMENTATION AND OPERATION BY THE PARK DEPARTMENT OF A PROGRAM TO BE CALLED "BICYCLE SUNDAY" • Whereas: The wholesome activity of bicycle riding appeals to both young and old. providing inexpensive outdoor exercise, and at virtually no cost to the City, and, Whereas: The tyranny of the automobile must be offset in present and future urban amenities, and, Whereas: The topography, climate, and quality of life in the City of Seattle lend themselves well to bicycle activities in many areas, and, Whereas: Few bicycle paths, as such, now exist, BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED THAT:

 1. One Sunday each month be designated "Bicycle Sunday" 2. That on this designated day certain streets be closed to motor traffic for the benefit of those on bicycles, as well as those on foot. 3. That these streets connect and/or abut Parks and Lakes wherever possible. 4. That this program be mapped and planned by the Park Department to insure a sustained, consistent and legal pattern of street use on the designated day. 5. That the Park Department be aided by the Police Department in establishing and maintaining such a program in its early phases.

For decades the Broad Street trench cut a diagonal across the street grid between South Lake Union and Lower Queen Anne/Seattle Center, rendering the entire area nearly uncrossable on foot or bike while also making it nearly impossible to build in the lots that remained. Truly deranged urban design.

But the detail that really got me what when they try to say this happened “without public engagement" even though they know there were years of public engagement about this b/c they were part of it. Below is a chart from a report they were part of detailing a public survey of more than 3K people.

In 2015 the city spent $237M rebuilding Mercer to be a 7-lane monster of a street with no transit and only a bike path to go under Aurora (b/c there was no other option). It's all for cars, and traffic on it sucks. This is exactly the point! www.seattlebikeblog.com/2015/05/05/m...
And where do the rest of those 30,000 vehicles go when Denny loses a lane? Mercer? Have you driven Mercer lately? There is no relief valve. You’re just squeezing traffic harder and hoping people give up.

Won't somebody please think of the car drivers?!? They are always so overlooked, forced to receive nearly all federal and state transportation funding and occupy nearly every inch of road space and use freeways that destroy neighborhoods and store their cars for free on public roadways.
Nobody at that podium spoke for the driver. Not one person represented the commuter sitting on Denny at 5:30 p.m. trying to get home. The entire event was transit advocates talking to transit advocates, celebrating a policy that makes their commute better by making yours worse.

Oh my god this is too much. Speeding up the county's least reliable bus route is the same as declaring war on cars.
screenshot of a Kiro radio story: Maybe it’s time to stop pretending there’s no war on cars in Seattle

For years, Seattle leaders have assured us there’s no war on cars. The city just doesn’t have the capacity for so many single-occupant vehicles. We need to be realistic about space. We need alternatives. Fair enough. Most of us accepted that.

But at what point do we stop taking that at face value? The mayor has never owned a car. She built her career advocating for Seattle bus lanes. Her first executive order targeted drivers on one of the city’s busiest corridors. Rinck is celebrating that new residents aren’t buying cars. Li told the press conference crowd that the RapidRide G project on Madison Street “convinced drivers to leave their cars at home.” We saw the same philosophy on Eastlake Avenue with the RapidRide J Line. Take road space. Remove options. Squeeze cars into fewer lanes. Then point at the bus.

Is it fair to wonder if maybe, just maybe, the war on cars is real? And the people waging it are now running the city?

Also, this page says ads are taxed based on where they were served. So does that mean I have to track where all my views are coming from and send relevant portions to each place? Do I have to pay for sales tax on views from other states?
Example 5: Multi-jurisdictional disseminated advertising – location of receipt unknown:

Facts: ADco3, a Washington-based company, sells retail taxable advertising services to Purchaser C for its IT business. Purchaser C contracts to have the advertising disseminated as part of a multistate advertising campaign. Purchaser C pays the contract price of $1 million before any advertising is disseminated. ADco3 does not know where the advertising will be disseminated at the time advertising services are invoiced and billed. ADco3 will not know the locations of use until potential customers enter certain keywords in their browsers and are served related advertising.

Result: Purchaser C receives the advertising services where the advertising is disseminated. ADco3 must report the sale under the retailing B&O tax classification and must collect and remit retail sales tax based on where Purchaser C received the service, if known. ADco3 will source the sale as follows:

If ADco3 is unable to determine where Purchaser C receives the advertising, or if ADco3 and Purchaser C cannot agree on an allocation method, ADco3 should use the address for the purchaser available in its business records, not determined in bad faith.
If ADco3 does not have an address for Purchaser C in its records, ADco may use an address for Purchaser C obtained at the time of sale (e.g., billing address), not determined in bad faith.
Note: ADco3 and Purchaser C may agree to allocate the $1 million selling price for retail sale to multiple locations based on a reasonable and consistent method of determining where the advertising will be disseminated. However, this allocation must be provided by the time of the invoice.
