The fact that they are doing it again is good and it swears to Ishtar if you people do not stop complaining about rainbow capitalism it is going to start screaming. You *want* rainbow capitalism. You do not want the alternative. Reward the behavior you want to see. This isnt hard.

This is stupid and pointless and punishes ground level employees because the people running the govt are cruel idiots but also I still have a grudge against the TSA as an agency because of Bush-era security theater reasons

"they really believe it"/"they will try to do it"/"the promises are real" are things that most americans refuse to believe about politicians but if you take them seriously will help you predict political behavior more often than not

It annoys me greatly how easy it would have been for everything to be okay. Not perfect, not even great, but just 5/10 "I can slog through a day in undisturbed mediocrity without the Health Secretary declaring soap causes autism while the president literally shitposts about his war from the toilet."

So I've read this article three times since yesterday, listened to Ella Langley, and got a cursory overview of the current landscape of country music trying to decipher what was irritating me so much about it. The thing I understood yesterday was that it's filled with missed opportunities.

my theory at this point is that "third spaces" is the "kitchen table issues" of this mini-discourse. its a term that evokes diffuse associations without actually saying anything

So I listened to Choosin' Texas finally and it's a good song. I'm glad it's doing well. I also feel like this is not at all surprising? That article has this deep sense of defensiveness and projection that I don't think is earned.

I find it strange that some people refuse to believe this is the way our decentralised culture works now, that it's possible to be completely ignorant of hugely popular things that don't match your tastes and interests. People aren't lying about that because they think it makes them look cool.

I'm reminded of one of my favorite passages in Banerjee and Duflo's "Good Economics for Hard Times". "The goal of social policy, in these times of change and anxiety, is to help people absorb the shocks that affect them without allowing those shocks to affect their sense of themselves.."

Okay, so I have a plan to get everyone on our side. First, we be absolutely as viscerally unpleasant as possible. Next, we downplay any time we get what we want, say it's the bare minimum and so forth. Finally, if anyone gives up and says we win or apologizes, we belittle them.

An edcuation policy soloution that would get you killed by angry parents but also fix like 60% of problems after a couple of generations is children being randomly assigned a public school within ten miles of their house. That is the school you attend and you cannot transfer.

part of this is obviously national political conditions but don't underrate the extent to which a bunch of these incumbent republicans have never had to run a competitive general election campaign and basically do not know how to do it

i am genuinely bewildered by people who say that the rise of white nationalism in the republican party is a response to the "woke left." like, did the woke left cause pat buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign? is the woke left why steve king had a long career in congress?

I'm far from an expert, but the story of the current state of Streamer Politics (at least left-of-center) is kind of interesting and, unfortunately, probably a window into the future of left/Dem politics. It's impossible to talk about without talking about the war at its heart: Destiny vs. Hasan.

Lots of people believe the Oval Office has a “make everything better” button which every occupant refuses to push. It doesn’t, but it has lots of “make everything worse” buttons, and Trump is mashing all of them every day.

A major concern in the 2020 and 2024 elections was the possibility the president’s son’s foreign connections could corruptly influence US policy. Despite many investigations into Hunter Biden, no one found any impact on US policy or even appearance thereof. But there could’ve been. Just imagine!

Making everyone feel like there's a fixed pie of resources and their slice is shrinking and everyone is out to fuck everyone else creates fertile ground for conservatism & eventually authoritarianism. The absolute core conviction of online leftists to the contrary is endlessly baffling.

the retconning is to support the argument that "trump won in 2024 because of anti-woke." but other than some nebulous "vibe shift" and the prominence of a few podcasters, there is vanishingly little hard evidence for this claim.

also, the public salience of trans girls playing sports is incredibly low. the public salience of say, data centers, is incredibly high. strange that a “popularist” cannot see this. almost as if “popularism” is a way to smuggle ones preferences in to politics as somehow objective.

3) AI is pretty bad at writing things for humans to read with a couple of caveats: it is better- though still not good- at writing for its user than it is for other audiences, and it’s not terrible at outlining. stop using AI to write things for other people to read.

I agree that the tech backlash has a lot to do with the fact that Silicon Valley has pretty much given up on giving us cool things - and has trained us to assume that tech products that *seem* cool are probably secretly evil. I wrote about this last year:

I Just Want a Cute Robot Lamp That Isn't Evil
Apple's engineers have figured out how to design a robot lamp so adorable that everyone I've shown the video to says they'd die for it. By studying how to translate human expression into the movement...
