Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

The way the media talk about the triple lock is so irresponsible, as if touching it is the same as slashing the pension in half or something. If I was a pensioner I'd happily sacrifice a few quid to know that a decent care system is going to look after me in the future.

How is it free? Because the absence of tax and overheads allows a vast investor bubble, which will burst and cause a financial crisis like 2008, when we haven't even recovered from that yet. You think the far right came from nowhere? No, it came from a financial crisis. Which we are still in.

The FT piece by @willoyd.bsky.social has some good insights, the main one being that Britain since Thatcher has become such an ideal student of late capitalism that it threw overboard all notions of self-sufficiency and backups because our leaders all believed next-day delivery would never end. Oops
From the FT longread:

There is no going back to the past without incurring enormous costs. “The central economic problem of resilience,” said Lang, “is that it asks capitalism to do what it doesn’t want to do at the moment.”

Stockpiles in a fatty civil defence system built to confront the Soviets — what an engineer would call “redundancies” — were stripped away and sold off, argues Thornton. “It’s now hard to go back to spend the money to recreate the kind of agencies and facilities and resources that we had in the cold war.”
