I’m neither a business person nor a scientist, so maybe I am naive about things like this. But why can’t these huge oil companies gradually transition themselves into energy companies that rely instead on things like solar/wind power? Maybe at this point it’s too late for a “gradual” transition.

If you work at an oil major, I urge you to think hard about what the next decade will feel like. Do you want to greenlight another decades-long extraction project without reckoning with its full climate cost? Or use this moment to demand a different path?

Treating this as an unstoppable race, and accepting the "endgame" of runaway warming, is a reckless gamble that should never be decided in a boardroom alone. Betting on future carbon removal to fix today's emissions requires far more confidence than the evidence supports.

A common response is "if they know this, why keep drilling?" At BP, many have not internalized the stakes personally. At ExxonMobil, the stakes are well understood, but they're locked in a race for market share, believing if they don't extract it, a competitor will.

The people running these companies believe that climate change could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a fringe worry. Publicly, many executives soften their language to sound reasonable, but privately, the fear is real. No other industry poses this level of danger to civilization.

Do not underestimate the scale of this climate crisis. We are watching feedback loops accelerate, ice sheet collapse, ocean heat content, methane release, that could lock in irreversible warming. We have all witnessed the data, and it is not slowing down.

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

I‘m sorry, but this reads like somebody with an addiction that genuinely needs help. If a friend told me they were talking and acting like this I’d be really worried!
Matt Van Horn, a serial entrepreneur and father of four, never turns his laptop off anymore. He has more than a half-dozen artificial intelligence agents running at all times in Anthropic's Claude Code.
Every 10 minutes or so, they ask him what to do next.
He keeps his laptop running at his kids' soccer practice, while dropping them off at school and in the hotel during vacations.
When he goes to sleep, one agent steps in to babysit the others.
Van Horn is one of many founders whose work has been transformed by AI. As he builds his latest company, he's used AI agents to help contribute to hundreds of projects on GitHub. But he and many other AI evangelists are also working longer hours than ever before as they grapple with anxieties about how Al might advance without them if they log off.
After 15 minutes of conversation with a Bloomberg reporter, he notes that most of his agents are probably waiting for his next prompt. "I don't have a therapist, but if I did, they'd be like, It's OK, Matt," he says with a laugh. "They said that agents were supposed to do our work for us, but I've never worked harder in my life. I just have 100 times the output that I had before."
