Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

There are so many amazing things you can say about Dolly Parton before you even get to her music. What a life. And I'll personally be most grateful that she secretly funded and produced Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

(6/6) The above examples are the tip of the iceberg. Two everyday, mundane experiences. I've not gone into various nervous breakdowns and mental health crises. Tik Tok memes are a bit of light relief, but ADHD is real and much more complicated than the stereotype in the press.

(5/6) Lastly, people take (abuse) the meds I'm on to get high. I can take them and still have a nap. My brain is just wired different.

(4/6) This is TMI, sorry, but I think it's important to spell it out. I stim when I'm understimulated. This is everything from fidgeting to binge eating, to pulling out hairs and chewing the skin off my fingers until I bleed. It's compulsive, hard to control and causes me great embarrassment.

Scott P @scottp128.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
(3/6) Struggling to focus applies to the fun stuff as well as work. When I'm unmedicated, there are days where I can't do *anything*. I can't read a book, watch a film, go for a walk. I like doing these things, I *want* to do them, but it's like I'm paralysed. On meds, I just do it!

Scott P @scottp128.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
(2/6) I think part of the problem is that ADHD is often over-simplified and mischaracterised as being a bit ditzy and struggling to focus at work ("We all do that!") Hence the moral panics about over-medicalising. I want to help illustrate what the everyday reality is actually like:

Short 🧵 on this. Lots of people are diagnosed who don't want any treatment, just to understand what's going on with them. Others, like me, find the treatment invaluable. It's a spectrum. The media thinks we're all after benefits or something, but we just want to get on in life. (1/6)

I know you all hate the emergency alert about disposable barbeques. But yesterday I watched a man at our hotel breakfast set fire to a toaster by trying to toast a croissant - despite multiple signs telling him not to. Today he tried again. So, you know, calibrate for the average person.

Good moment to say something nice about Binface I suppose. The thing is, he's really very funny. The whole thing would have worn out horribly if he wasn't. Just a genuine source of joy in an otherwise grey landscape.

A cinema in Canada never received their Spider-Man Brand New Day posters so one of the employees drew his own and it is one of the greatest things I have ever seen
Hand drawn poster for spider-man brand new day featuring a lumpy, mis-shapen Spidey doing web shooter hand pose. Writing at the bottom reads “sorry! We never received the real posters! Sorry for any incoveniences!”

It’s crazy how fast we normalise stuff. I remember going to Australia in 2018, watching wildfires on the news, and thinking “wow I’m so glad I live in the uk where that never happens”

Had a thought this morning that, in contrast to most of human history, we’re moving into an era where summers are scarier than winters. May be wrong, but feel like there’s something in it.

Still thinking about it. I was riveted by Brand New Day. A very smart and emotional film that felt pure 'Spidey'. Can't think of many franchises that nail four in a row. Maybe Toy Story...

Can’t speak to modern primary education, but in my English MA we learned that these classics became a fixation of the elites during the Renaissance. Citing them was a way of showing off your status. I imagine this filtered down over the centuries. Agree the Celtic myths are so rich and v overlooked!

Young adults (a category which includes 34 year olds with kids and mortgages) are just switching off completely. Look at the first graphic showing audience figures from five years ago. And the equivalent graphic from today, which shows the massive collapse.

Spoke with some students yesterday about TV soaps. Most had never heard or seen any of Corrie or EastEnders. One asked if they were sitcoms. Genres that were once culturally embedded just... not, anymore. Felt old.

I've neglected the cinema overall this year. Emma invited me and I went in knowing the title and that it was about space, and that was it! But it was just a joy from start to finish. Once I saw Drew Goddard's credit I was like, ah, makes sense!

Stumbled across this: The root of "female" has nothing to do with "male". It derives from the Mediaeval Latin femella, a diminutive of femina, a woman. It was mistakenly transcribed in Middle English as "female", perhaps creating the impression that a woman is a version/variant/ subset of a man.
