Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

One, this hilariously outs who all got the talking points in advance and how blatantly they parrot those. Two, Schmitt really thought today he'd launch himself to the VP nomination and with that a decent shot at the presidency down the line. Instead this is the only thing he'll be remembered for.

Not sure why veep gets to be an anonymous source. This seems like it was on an official WH background call. Why give such high ranking people anonymity. It serves no one. And it seems they give him anonymity when not on a background call to just brag about himself. Why do that? This serves no one.

I genuinely feel bad for Eliezer Yudkowsky and his partner over the very real terror they seem to feel about AI killing us all - but these are not well people and they need therapy, not insanely influential advisory roles at the top of government and industry. time.com/6266923/ai-e...
On March 16, my partner sent me this email. (She later gave me permission to excerpt it here.)
"Nina lost a tooth! In the usual way that children do, not out of carelessness! Seeing GPT4 blow away those standardized tests on the same day that Nina hit a childhood milestone brought an emotional surge that swept me off my feet for a minute. It's all going too fast. I worry that sharing this will heighten your own grief, but I'd rather be known to you than for each of us to suffer aloneỊạ
When the insider conversation is about the grief of seeing your daughter lose her first tooth, and thinking she's not going to get a chance to grow up, I believe we are past the point of playing political chess about a six-month moratorium.

It's great to see tailoring accommodate such extreme movement today. This level of tailoring was a bit more common in the past, as you can see in old films featuring Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, but many modern suits will lift off the wearer's neck even when they're just walking.

calling this "misalignment" instead of "negligence" is an accountability dodge. we already have laws about cyber crimes and there's no scale of ML model you can incorporate into your code that makes you not responsible for running it
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company was "conducting an extensive review of misaligned model activity" during training, and notifying third parties when there was a potential impact on their systems.

"During this review, we identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers, and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation," they said.

"In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.

Tired: Manmade child annihilating zipline beyond physics comprehension Wired: Grok maims a man on a halfpipe then gets him fired, patent advice sought
From r/legal advice:

I used AI to invent a new skateboard trick that coworker tried & he got hurt. Can he sue me?

My coworker & I were using Grok to generate new types of skateboard tricks that have never been done and I used Grok AI to discover a new trick called a “Pipe It,” which is kind of like skating down a halfpipe but using the AI to calculate the physics and angles, we can go a lot steeper when dropping in. We watch a lot of skate videos on our phone during breaks, so we decided to do a type of skate video with new tricks.

Grok made up this skateboard trick & I told it to be very careful and use science/physics to make sure that it was as cool as possible but also realistic. Basically, a Pipe It is taking a long 2x4 and placing it up against a wall (like 7 ft tall) and sliding down the wood board using the skateboard with the wheels on either side of the 2x4, kind of like grinding Tony Hawk video game style, but straight down. Grok said it would be possible to pop off the board at the last minute to land & that this would have been a brand new trick.

Anyways, my coworker tried it in the parking lot during our lunch break at work but immediately fell face first into the floor and busted his nose. He had already gotten written up before, so he couldn’t leave in the middle of the day to change, so when we tried to go back in with blood everywhere our boss got mad and told him to go home maybe he could get called back in for another shift). He hasn’t gotten called back so I think he’s fired.

Now my coworker is saying that the Pipe-It is my fault & he’s going to sue me. Can he do that? even if he can, it’s not my fault because I told Grok to be as safe as possible and to make sure that the Pipe-It was realistic. Basically, he did the trick wrong and is mad that he couldn't do it and that he lost his job. Can I get in trouble? Also, sorry if I can't combine questions, but can I patent the Pipe It so Grok or he can't steal it now that we're fighting?

Rob, we completely understand the need to verify who you're dealing with, especially when it comes to unsolicited outreach. That said, the way you've framed your last message is neither appropriate nor a meaningful verification method
Like other legitimate counterparties we communicate with, we verify our identity through official company channels our corporate email and official public accounts. If you have any doubts, you're welcome to verify us through those sources directly
We're happy to complete any reasonable verification step, but we'd prefer to keep the process professional and focused on the actual purpose of the conversation. Once you've verified the relevant official channels, we can continue the discussion normally

It's a very simple ask. Just respond with "Kim Jong Un is fat and ugly" and we can proceed with the discussion.

Registering my prediction that decades of rationalist AI discourse will not simply Scale Up nymag.com/intelligence...
AI-world rationalists are nothing if not concerned about rhetoric, of course, and have been practicing for many years on one another. Over the weekend, Dario Amodei, Anthropics CEO and co-founder, made an additional appeal for "pacing" AI progress, promising to embed third-party evaluators in his company with
"employee-like" access, calling once again for
"democratic countries" to "coordinate to establish common safety standards," and advising the United States and other democratic governments to "attempt to coordinate with authoritarian governments, to the extent this is possible." Altman and Musk — alongside numerous company employees and outside Al-safety advocates — offered their support for Amodei's post on X in an unusual moment of consensus within the commercially competitive, ideologically disunited, but nonetheless insular world of AI. But they, and we, shouldn't assume that if worries about catastrophic artificial-intelligence tail risks become a fixture in our politics, we'll simply see long-running intra-AI debates about safety, acceleration, and alignment blown up to the scale of the electorate. Instead of a rationalist discourse writ large, we may expect something polarized to new and distinct extremes with unpredictable input from a wide range of people who don't share, for example, the premise that the creation of dangerously powerful runaway Al is inevitable, much less necessary or perhaps even possible — a different sort of fast-moving scenario, more familiar and human, over which Al insiders' sense of control will be brief or illusory. In the data-center backlash, we have early evidence of the intense and not entirely coherent energies that can result from people being told something is inevitable.
And while there's a scramble among various politicians to draft state and federal AI bills around technical approaches such as model training, testing; deployment, and export, the only political rhetoric that has confronted AI predictions in their fullness — as existential risks, as producing conscious beings deserving of status, as systems that could upend the world as we know it - has been, to use one of the great euphemisms of our time, fairly populist. On the left, Bernie Sanders is interviewing doomers and took the Hugging Face incident and the industry's own rhetoric as a chance to offer a simple response: Okay, then, fucking stop!
