Western civilization includes Just War Theory and the Laws of Armed Combat. Those aren't PC niceties, they're the legacy of centuries of philosophy, religion, tradition, and the accumulated lessons of bloody experience. Hegseth doesn't champion Western civilization, he rejects the civilized part.

A GOP Governor? In California? Unless the Dems Get It Together, Yes.
The state’s Democratic honchos are refusing to impose any discipline over an eight-person field. They better act soon, or they’ll hand the state a MAGA governor.

No mention of the intense and almost universal pushback they've faced, no mention either that NONE OF THESE PEOPLE IS AN ACTUAL HISTORIAN. Absolute whitewashing. Which goes to my point that it's not really abt these ppl. It's about the STRUCTURES that elevate them.

Has the NYT ever quoted an “independent” critical of Trump who turned out to be a Democratic Party county chair or some such? These “mistakes” and “oversights” pretty much only happen in one direction.

TL;DR, candidates like Platner happen when nobody wants to do the hard thing and run a campaign against an entrenched incumbent

Still, if somehow Platner beats Mills in the primary and then beats Collins, and it’s a big IF, then it is a massive indictment of the national and the Maine Democratic establishment: basically everyone was afraid to challenge Collins and the party had an outdated idea of what is “electable.”

But this comes before Collins, the NRSC and the Senate Leadership Fund drop a money bomb on Maine the way they did to Sherrod Brown, Tim Ryan and Bob Casey. And Lord knows Collins will try and hit Platner for his baggage (and maybe some stuff we don’t know).

The DC and NYC’s elite media crowd/pundits (or hardcore leftists) who want to discount these ultra normies - are doing what the far right always complained about media when cover protests in 60s-80s - media forgetting about “silent majority” This is the silent majority being visible and loud.

The NYT says today’s #NoKings protests had “no shortage of skeptics,” and then quoted exactly one of those skeptics: The chairman of the Ole Miss College Republicans (as of 2025.) But of course, the Times doesn’t ID him as such. He’s just a Concerned Youth.
The marches had no shortage of skeptics.
In Oxford, Miss,, Cass Rutledge, a first-year law student at the University of Mississippi, walked through the No Kings protest and around the town square on Saturday and questioned why people thought Mr. Trump was acting like a king.
"He is, you know, a duly elected president who won the popular vote and the electoral college in a landslide," Mr. Rutledge said.
"And so I'm a little bit confused on how he's acting differently than any other president."
He pointed to the stalemate in Congress over the SAVE America Act, the Republican-driven bill to tighten voter identification and registration rules, which Democrats have called an attempt to suppress turnout based on false claims of voting fraud. Mr. Rutledge said that Mr.
Trump was "going through the process" to try to get the legislation passed.olemiss.collegerepublicans • Follow The University of Mississippi - Ole Miss

In all seriousness though, elder millennial jokes aside, I think it’s important to resist the media framing of any mainstream resistance to the status quo as just the shrill nonsense of middle-aged women with nothing better to do. This isn’t the first time they’ve run out this playbook.

Something I will say is that local media coverage of No Kings is vastly different than national media. I've had issues with some media here in Boston today, but by and large they are accurately capturing the scale of the protests and how significant they are.

The Declaration of Independence specifies 27 grievances with King George III and Britain. Donald Trump and his regime have committed at least 20 of those same offenses highlighted in yellow. #NoKings
An image of a list of the 27 grievances against King George III in the Declaration of Independence. Donald Trump's regime has committed at least 20 of them in whole or in part, condensed into the list below:
1.	He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
2.	He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation …
3.	He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing … his invasions on the rights of the people.
4.	He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; … obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners …
5.	He has obstructed the Administration of Justice …
6.	He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices …
7.	He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
8.	He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
9.	He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
10.	He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution … giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
11.	For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
12.	For protecting them … from punishment for any Murders which they should commit …
13.	For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
14.	For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
15.	For depriving us … of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
16.	For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
17.	For … abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
18.	He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
19.	He has … destroyed the lives of our people.
20.	He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us …

In fairness it’s not like the consequences of having a mad king unilaterally take the country to war on a whim were so incredibly obvious that you could see it coming from the 18th and 19th centuries www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
“Kings had always been involving and impoverishing their people in wars, pretending generally, if not always, that the good of the people was the object,” a young representative named Abraham Lincoln wrote in 1848. This was “understood to be the most oppressive of all Kingly oppressions and they resolved to so frame the Constitution that no one man should hold the power of bringing this oppression upon us.” This quote, incidentally, is immortalized on the House’s website, if any members of Congress are looking for it.

Just to add a little contrarian anecdata… the university I chose was an exceptionally rainy place and at the time, a tiny campus. But the rain led to cozy tutorials, with fires, and tea and cookies. Everyone knew each other and there was a pub within easy walking distance of everywhere.

I have a MA in U.S. history but it was mostly focused on the latter part of the 20th century. One of the positive (?) outcomes of the current admin’s war on the constitution, settled legal precedents & long standing statute, is I’m gaining a much deeper understanding of how these developed.

I've been DREAMING of ducklings at this pond since I got into bird photography, perfect for at water level. There are a fair bit of non migratory mallards, but I never heard a report of any ducklings, I assume due to heron attacks. Until Saturday. Worth the wait. 🪶 🐣
A mallard duckling swings by as a little yellow something floats in the air A mama mallard gives a little kiss to a duckling A back lit duckling on golden water. Very little editing. A duckling smiling on green water, almost perfect reflection
