what makes the new N Willamette PCEF-protected bike route so dreamy, especially when you’re biking east, is how continuous it is. 3.5 miles of smooth, concrete protected, wide and dedicated bikeway with only one intersection to stop at

A bit surprised by some of the rosy assumptions about driverless cars & traffic when we literally just went through this experiment with Uber and Lyft. A lot of folks, myself included, were wrong about what ride-hailing apps would do to car ownership & VMT. (Safety is potentially a different story!)

Did Portland Police Chief Bob Day break the law when he criticized a city councilor last week? That’s a question several Portlanders are asking state officials to answer.

Best thing at this year's fair is the @metcouncilmn.bsky.social wastewater exhibit in the Eco Experience building. Navigate to the little wall display showing a black and white movie of the Mississippi River at around East 38th Street, oozing methane bubbles and filled with human and other waste.
A large, lumpy yellow ball in a clear plastic display case, called a "fatberg" by wastewater professionals. The fatberg is about twice the size of an adult human head. It's made of many fatty household items and often contains personal cleansing wipes, which are sold as flushable but are clearly not. Accompanying the fatberg is descriptive text.

When we blame reckless drivers for the damage they cause we inadvertently deflect attention away from the inherent danger baked into our transportation system. This plays into the auto industry’s hands & obscures how reckless and irresponsible *they* are - it’s exactly what the auto industry wants.

Curb cuts are a great start! But repairing W. shouldn’t happen without safety upgrades, sidewalk widening, transit priority, and BAT lanes. This street is my neighborhood’s main street; it should be a welcoming, safe, and beautiful place instead of a suburban driver’s shortcut for Hwy. 26.

If you think buying an electric car is an effective way to address the climate crisis or environmental degradation you’ve been duped by the auto industry. The only real solution is getting as many cars as reasonable off the road and ensuring active and public transit systems are at potential.

There seems to be a growing sentiment that it is somehow more traumatic or more fatal if you are killed in road traffic outside of a vehicle. As if the violent death is all around easier if the victim is in a car. And that justice is served for people killed or injured inside vehicles. Guys. No.
