An enormous area of #Antarctic ice covering 1,400km by 400km, more than 4km thick in places, holds an estimated 3-4m of global sea-level rise, if melted. But for something so consequential for the natural world and human society, the Wilkes Subglacial Basin in #East Antarctica is largely unknown.

I did some quick napkin maths calculation on this. If the guardian article mentions 300MW replacing these engines, I think that 1 million dollar fee represents about 3-5 days of fuels costs for the 45 Bergen generators.

Microsoft has a 17bn dollar, 5 year deal with Nebius for the compute.

Nebius is paying DataOne to build the actual datacentres, and provide the generators to power them.

Moreover, a 17bn dollar deal, if you divide it by 60 months, is what? 290 million dollars per month?

What good is a 1million dollar fine if you're being paid 290 milion dollars by Microsoft, per month for it, who presumably are selling the compute for *more than* 290 million dollars per month?

No wonder they were happy to be allowed to keep running it - the cost of switching off the servers for a month would have been hundreds of times the cost of the fine.

Sometimes it's difficult to tell male and female Powerful Owl's apart. We hadn't yet seen the female but something about the chunky fierceness of this POwl suggested male. Powerful by name, and nature and the only bird in Australia that can fly carrying prey heavier than itself. #birds #wildoz
This male Powerful Owl was preening in a very urban Brisbane park. Despite being almost over a busy footpath he and his partner were so high and so well tucked in the branches it was difficult to spot them.

The Saddlebacks must be having a good year, because between us, the women in my family have found four recently, and none of us had ever seen one before! 🌿
Big Saddleback Caterpillar on a tupperware lid. It's about an inch long and brown with what I can't stop thinking of as a saddle blanket marking with a white hem covering its middle section. On its back is the little brown "saddle" marking. It has two big spikes on each end and lots of little ones, including along the bottom edge on the side, all covered with thick, black-tipped stinging hairs. It's weird and cute.
