Gray whale safe haven in Puget Sound takes on new significance amid population decline | Encyclopedia of Puget Sound
Almost 200 gray whales have washed up dead along the West Coast in 2026. A small group of gray whales who feed in Puget Sound is surprisingly central to understanding the crisis.

Somewhere right now, a whale just pooped. That poop fuels a plankton bloom, which feeds krill, which feeds fish and seabirds. Eventually, it feeds the whales themselves. #HappyWorldAnimalDay

Roughly 60,000 ships cross the Strait of Gibraltar yearly, creating intense noise pollution that forces long-finned pilot whales to boost their call volume. But shouting fails over long distances, raising concerns that animals may become lost and isolated from their pods. Learn more! 👇

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a high school basketball game. The home team is down 9 points, and some players are looking discouraged on the bench. The coach points to a player just out of frame and says, “flippers, you’re in!” Panel 2: the away team attempts a deep 2-point shot, possibly to beat the buzzer, which is blocked by Flippers, a whale who doesn’t even have his arms up. Panel 3: the game ends and the home team excitedly crowd around Flippers, who won them the game. A player from the away team looks stunned, with his hands on his head.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: underwater ocean camera view of a whale fall on the sea floor, with various bottom feeders and weird fishes crawling around the decomposing remains. Off panel, someone says, “hang on a second…” Panel 2: the speaker is a member of a marine biologist crew, remotely viewing the video footage from a computer monitor. The biologist is leaning against his colleague’s chair. He continues, “pan the camera back.” Panel 3: Back underwater, the POV shifts to the other end of the whale carcass. There’s a large spider crab with a standing just off to the side. It has a human face in a neutral expression, and is wearing glasses. The marine biologist says, “I think I went to high school with that guy.”

Tracking the fin whale and the sperm whale in the Mediterranean
Where are the great marine animals of the Mediterranean, such as the fin whale, the sperm whale or the bottlenose dolphin? How does their distribution change over a few weeks? All indications suggest that these species shift between marine areas in a remarkably short time and over relatively small spatial scales. Some species, such as the striped dolphin, maintain a relatively stable presence in certain areas, while others, such as the fin whale, move and concentrate in different areas from one observation campaign to the next.
