One couple, a man and a woman whose account is dedicated to selling TikTok Shop products, have posted multiple videos marketing the glasses by pretending that the woman was recorded during sex without her knowledge or consent:

One couple, a man and a woman whose TikTok account is dedicated to shopping content designed to garner affiliate commissions on TikTok Shop purchases, have made several videos promoting less-expensive smart glasses. In some of these videos, they market what they claim are light-free glasses by pretending that the woman is unaware that her partner was recording her during sex due to the lack of an indicator light.

“Whew! Dang, baby. That was real good — and a good video, too,” the man tells the woman in one such video. The woman, who’s filmed point-of-view-style as she pretends to zip up her pants, feigns confusion. “Video?” she asks.

“Oh, you didn’t know?” the man responds. The woman, still looking confused, notes that “there’s no flash.”

“Baby, these aren’t those $400 ones, okay,” the man shoots back, before launching into a rundown of the cheaper recording shades’ features.

This provides no value to ordinary people, but it gives a quantitative fig leaf to enforce and amplify a social hierarchy. Closing an "AI divide" by increased adoption in Africa means what? Replacing this old-fashioned discriminatory algorithm with a chatbot? This is not a technical problem.

The brain does weird things in response to trauma. How we react isn’t exactly a choice. My own brain refused to think about it clearly for years even as it led me to make visible changes in my daily life in some sad effort to protect myself. I only saw the connection in hindsight.

Tonight Tennessee is going to execute the first woman legally executed in 200 years. The first was an unnamed Black woman who was hanged for murder in Sumner County in 1819.
