One more thing about the Tyneside nurdle crisis is that the clean-up efforts have drawn attention to all the other plastic in our sea. This volunteer’s video shows all the plastics left after sieving out the nurdles; what’s not visible is the tiny tiny microplastics that wash through the nets.

Quite a lot of people lost someone, maybe an elderly relative, during the heatwave. My Aunt Barbara, very ill with advanced dementia, died yesterday aged 91. She was unmarried, no kids and I had been taking care of her affairs for the past few years. That’s the least interesting thing about her. 1

21 March 2026Safe places for children to play - A further £18 million will be spent ensuring children in 66 of the most deprived communities have quality play spaces, with cash earmarked to buy new or upgrade playgrounds across the country from Tyneside to Torquay.

Areas with the highest income deprivation affecting children and the poorest access to play were chosen, to ensure money goes to places that need it most.Funding for playgrounds will flow straight to Local areas, with no requirements to bid or compete against other places. Councils receiving funding will also be encouraged to consider buying British materials.• This funding package was first confirmed at the Budget by the Chancellor.
