What's the plan, @newhamcouncil.bsky.social? Businesses that support literacy, writers & schools as enthusiastically as @newhambookshop.bsky.social are treasures in our communities. I know balancing the books is hard for LAs, but losses of literacy opportunity must be weighed in that balance, too.

Are we getting a skewed understanding of dying from the stories that gain media attention? I was delighted and honoured to be invited to close the day at End Well 2025. Here's my take. bit.ly/EndWellStory...

What We’ve Forgotten About “Ordinary Dying” | Dr. Kathryn Mannix | End Well 2025
For most of human history, dying was something people witnessed, understood, and supported at home. Today, many of us reach the end of life without ever having seen it. In this talk from End Well 2025, Dr. Kathryn Mannix explores how advances in medicine - while lifesaving - have also shaped a widespread misunderstanding of dying. When the only stories we hear are the hardest ones, it distorts what we expect. Through vivid examples and reflections from her decades in palliative care, she makes a case for something simple and urgent: we need to reclaim the stories of ordinary dying. Because storytelling is how we make sense of what we live through, and how we help others do the same. Oh, @michaelrosenyes.bsky.social, this is another treasure. Thank you.
Cover of Michael Rosen's new book, 'Where Are You, Eddie?' Illustrated by Gill Smith.
It shows Michael sitting at his table with a mug of tea, along with his cat Meg (black cat, white face, tummy and socks, for the cat lovers among us), looking at a framed photo of younger Michael and his son, Eddie, both looking very happy. Michael's expression is a wistful smile.
There's someone looking in through the window. He's smiling. He's the only feature of this colourful picture that's in grey tones: he's Eddie. He's looking in. And he's smiling.
Michael's message to readers at the back of his book.
Buy the book!Michael and me at the BBC in London, 2021, to record Word of Mouth, an episode about listening.
The Sad Book is on the desk - Michael has just signed it for me.
We talked about Eddie and how people sometimes think that they should try to cheer us up instead of listening.
It's on BBC Sounds if you'd like to hear it.

🚨 JUST IN: New research shows nearly 1 in 3 people don’t get the end of life care they need. This is unacceptable. Dying people deserve better. The UK government must make end of life care a priority so everyone feels cared for, comfortable and pain-free when they’re dying.
