Well said @profdevisridhar.bsky.social. Most of us are doing our best. Choose your leaders wisely, folks, and use your disposable income and time to the best of your ability. #PublicHealth #MedSky
Most people do the best they can for their health in the circumstances they live under. The biggest two determinants are the country you live in (and the government's approach to the issue) and your disposable income and time. It's not because people are stupid, lazy, or don't know how to improve their health.

More on public health, from @profdevisridhar.bsky.social… One person’s freedom to do something, may impact on someone else’s freedom to live a healthy life. (Think cars, guns and cigarettes, for starters…) #MedSky
Public health (and associated policies and legislation) has too often been framed as something that takes away, rather than taking steps to protect freedoms to help you live a long and healthy life.

What the NHS needs from government… 🧵5/n
What the NHS needs is a government willing to put the investment in: into prevention and public health so Britain doesn't have an increasingly unhealthy population; into adequate financing and putting the money into the public sector instead of falling to lobbying interests and moving it into private company hands; and into its staff who are the backbone of the service offered.

On longevity, and privilege… Another quote from @profdevisridhar.bsky.social’s book.
Queen Victoria's and Elizabeth II's long lives aren't unique for the royal family. A historian analysed the longevity of twenty-seven royals (six of the last British monarchs and their spouses and children) and found that on average they lived an additional thirty years compared to their subjects. If you want to learn how not to die too soon, a good place to look is in the royal quality of life.

Wise words from @profdevisridhar.bsky.social in her book. #Inequality #SDOH #SocialDeterminantsOfHealth
When I was interviewed by Grazia Pakistan in 2022, I was asked if there was anything I would change in the world. My answer was that I would love to see more girls staying in school-being supported by their families, communities and teachers to get an education. Research shows clearly that when girls are educated, child survival improves, domestic violence goes down, societies are more equal, and there's a greater sense of community and wellbeing.

A short thread of more quotes from @profdevisridhar.bsky.social’s book “How Not to Die Too Soon”… Universal healthcare requires a societal contract. 🧵1/n
Universal health care requires a societal contract in which everyone pays in based on their ability to pay, and everyone gets health care based on their health need. This means those who are healthy subsidize those who are ill, the young largely subsidize the old, and the rich subsidize the poor.

“Healthcare isn’t a luxury like a handbag or designer shoes”. Well said @profdevisridhar.bsky.social! #BookSky #MedSky 🧵4/n
It makes sense: why would any private company want to have to cover the medical costs of someone who will need ongoing medical care? This is the danger of leaving health care to market forces, and health care isn't a luxury like a handbag or designer shoes.

From @profdevisridhar.bsky.social in her book. In this case discussing mental health, but also very applicable to physical health. We solve most health problems better when re recognise that they are much bigger than individual failures of willpower. #BookSky #MedSky #PublicHealth
It's the disconnect between knowing what needs to be done and having the support to do it. This is where the government needs to step in to ensure that it's not left completely up to individuals to 'help themselves'.
