🟣 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Too often, people think of domestic violence only in terms of bruises and broken bones. But narcissistic abuse is domestic violence—it’s coercive control, manipulation, and silencing.

Recovery for survivors often means looking beyond crisis moments to our self-beliefs, many of which are trauma-adaptations & needlessly cruel. Passive suicide ideation is far from "passive" – its state of distress that deserves our attention, compassion, and curiosity. #cptsd #NAMI #recovery
Passive suicidal ideation is so common in trauma survivors that many don't bother to even mention it when they're being assessed— it's just always there.

It becomes like the barely noticeable background music in a TV show.

If you had the chance to talk directly with an astronaut aboard the International Space Station, what would you ask? Would you want to know about life in microgravity, scientific research, technology on the ISS, views of Earth from orbit, or something else? Drop your question in the comments!
Graphic promoting audience engagement with ARISS. On the left, a NASA photo shows an astronaut aboard the International Space Station using amateur radio equipment inside the Columbus module, surrounded by cables, equipment racks, mission patches, and station hardware. On the right, a dark blue panel contains the text: “If you could talk to an astronaut... What would you ask someone living and working aboard the International Space Station? Students participating in ARISS contacts ask astronauts questions ranging from daily life in space to science, technology, and future exploration. Share your question in the comments!” A caption at the bottom credits the image as a NASA photo of ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet using amateur radio in the ISS Columbus Module in 2021. In trauma recovery we train ourselves to let go of hypervigilance-- not because it's "stupid," but because it's an inefficient tool if our actual goal is safety. Hypervigilance exhausts us without really moving the needle on safety. It's a security blanket w/ holes in it.

as so often, Terry Pratchett had it nailed.
Death and Susan talking in Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET— Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME... SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"But people have got to believe that, or what's the point?"

MY POINT EXACTLY.

CPTSD - They call it disorder, that’s false. It’s not a post traumatic stress either. Complex Trauma - begins in childhood and in most cases never ends. The damage it does is that we normalize abuse and chaos since we never knew the difference. That’s why we let it continue and walk into our lives.

One of the hardest parts of CPTSD recovery can be accepting that we were tricked. Lied to. Forced to adopt beliefs about ourselves that were wrong, often by the very people who were supposed to teach us what was true & real. That stings. We don't get over that all at once.

Lake Ontario's name comes from the Wyandot word Ontarí'io, which is typically translated as "beautiful lake". The Kanienʼkéha called it Katarokwi. Samuel de Champlain called it Lac de St. Louis. The name Lacus Ontario was first recorded in 1660 by Francis Creuxius.

Self compassion is not "nice to have" in realistic trauma recovery, or an abstract, aspirational idea-- it is a fundamental tool. The beliefs & attitudinal lens through which we understand & respond to ourselves affects all our feelings & decisions. It matters.

Trauma recovery that isn't realistic & sustainable isn't recovery. Start w/ extremely small habits. Avoid changing too much at once. Build slowly, not intensely, & focus on the basics of how you're talking & relating to yourself today, in this minute. Keep it real.
