Little blue heron, not blue #birds
Little blue heron hunting, facing right. Despite the name, every feather on this bird is white. In the photo her snakelike neck and head head are held low and generally horizontally, and lower than her body, as if she is about to attack some small doomed thing on the ground. Her eye is yellow and her legs are faint yellow-green. The foreground and background are composed of soft dark brown ground, and the heron’s bright body contrasts nicely with it.

Brewer’s sparrow, the bird with no field marks. Or: the mark is no mark at all. My lifer! I saw sooo many of these sweet lil passerellids in Wyoming last week Denizen of sage and spruce. Friendly, unassuming, modest, perfectly happy to just be part of the high altitude landscape #birds
Brewer’s sparrow perched on a conifer, body facing left, head turned to the right. Light colored breast and flanks, gray-brown wings and tail and head, small and short triangular bill, dark eye. A remarkably plain bird, small, sincere, not demanding anything of anyone

We were asleep at 220am in our backwoods wyoming cabin when a black bear climbed through the window over the sink and ate all our food including our peanut butter and broke a lot of dishes and the coffeemaker carrafe and here is a peanut butter bear nose print on a pan lid that somehow did not break

Welp my long lens crapped out on me on day 3 of a 12-day trip to Wyoming but before it did it helped me get this shot of my LIFER! green tailed towhee This sweet lil bird happens to be a junior edition of that particular species #birds
Juvenile green-tailed towhee, standing on a log, facing left. This bird’s mostly gray head and body are mildly floofed out. A faint yellow wash covers his flanks and lower belly and his wings are dark gray edged in yellow-green. The long tail has the same characteristics. He has a soft brown eye and a heavy light-colored triangular beak just barely opened. The background is unfocused brown and green.

So I’m in Wyoming and it turns out they have yellow birds here #birds
Female yellow warbler perched on a dead branch, facing right. She is a small bird with a long uniformly light yellow body, dark eye, and a sharp pink beak. Her wings have some dark gray in them but the flight feathers are edged in yellow. Yellow yellow yellow is the theme here, a nice soft shade. The background is jumbled and out of focus foliage.

The best thing about this picture is, she has a duckweed leaf stuck to her eyeball #birds
Black bellied whistling duck, facing left, against a background of bright green duckweed-covered water. This duck has a brown neck and a tan head and a handsome brown-gray crown stripe. Also a bright pink bill with a gray nail. Most at of her body is hidden by some plants in the foreground but her head is clear and the sun reflects in her eye. She has a teeny duckweed leaf stuck to the inner corner of her eyeball.

You never know who you’re gonna find down at the old state park #birds
White ibis standing in water covered in green growing things, facing right. This tall long-necked all-white bird’s back is mostly to the camera and you can see the texture of his wing feathers in the sunlight, which is from the left. His head is turned in a perfect profile against the green background. His legs are pink and his fabulous long downcurved bill is red. His small eye is perfectly round and bright blue, set against red lores. An otherworldly creature.

I’m not sure if I should have been surprised to find this turquoise eyed villain in the small retention pond at Georgia Southern Univeristy, but I was #birds
Juvenile double crested cormorant swimming in green water, facing right. The bird’s long body is nearly completely submerged in the water but her light brown neck is upright and her drowning face is angled slightly upward. Her orange-yellow beak is large and long and hooked and her eye is bright turquoise.

Been away for a few weeks but now I’m back with this fine carrot faced monster #birds
American oystercatcher on light colored sand against pale blue green water, standing, facing right. This tallish longish-necked bird has a coffee colored back and a black head and a short tail and a bright white belly and flanks. She has long knobby legs the color of ballet slippers. Her yellow eye is encircled by a bright orange orbital ring but her finest feature is her long straight beak the approximate color of a brand new, never-been-used traffic cone.

I assume this is a juvenile male just molting into his adult plumage. I really like the funky textures he has going on
A male Gadwall shaking out his feathers while standing in calm water.

This is a brown duck with a black rump. He has a fine scalloped pattern on his chest, interspersed with fluffy brown feathers. His rust-red and white wing patches are just visible under brown contour feathers. His bill is orange at the bottom and dark brown on top.

Lucky 13 #birds
Tree swallow pokes her head out of a bluebird box. The box nearly fills the frame and the hole opens to the left and the swallow’s head is poking out of the hole and on the front and side of the box you can see the faded number 13. The bird’s head is iridescent blue-green above and white below. She has a sharp short beak and you can just see her sharp feet poking out at the bottom edge of the hole. The background is bright unfocused focused yellow-green.

Master of the wind #inflight #birdoftheday #birds
Front view of a Forster’s tern hovering while scanning the pond for lunch. The camera looks right down the bird’s long axis so all you can really see is (1) the head, which is turned to the left and down, and which features a nice dark eye spot and sharp black beak on a mostly white creature; (2) the wings, which are lifted in perfect symmetry to their maximum upward position and are edged in dark gray; (3) the tail, which is fanned out maximally in a neat white isosceles triangle behind the bird; and (4) the legs, which hang in a relaxed state, feet turned slightly inward, symmetric. Symmetry is the word for this photo. The background is steel blue cloudy sky.

Limpkin considers flight (Aramus guarauna) CREW flint pen strand Bonita Springs, Florida 5-27-26 Alan & Rob’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #SilentPresence, where a bird appears calm, watchful, or contemplative, rather than active. The alt is #Swans. #birds #photography #Stunday #ECK #threewordgenre
Perched on a grassy bank against a soft, blue-gray background, this large, gangly wading bird is primarily a rich chocolate brown, with dense white streaks and triangular spots concentrated on its slender neck and upper body. It has an elongated, slightly down-curved bill that is yellowish at the base and darker at the tip—a specialized adaptation for extracting its primary food source, apple snails. The bird stands on long, dark-gray legs, looking toward the left with its neck held in a graceful curve. In the foreground, thin blades of grass and small white wildflowers are softly blurred, adding a natural texture to the scene.

This is an actual bird it is not an AI bird #birds
Prothonotary warbler perched on a branch, facing right, head thrown back, beak wide open, singing his sweet head off. This is a small and very yellow bird. Lemon yellow all over except: his wings which are olive and gray and edged in white; his beak which is black; and his undertail which is white. He is slightly floofed and you can see his backlit tongue just barely! The background is unfocused bright spring green foliage.

Junior pelican hits that pose for #worldoceansday #birdoftheday #birds
Juvenile brown pelican standing in the shallow surf, viewed from behind. The bird’s head is turned to the left so you have a nice profile of his brown head and long brown beak, which is held down against the bird’s body. The wing feathers, folded across his back, are brown edged in white. His legs are short and you can’t see the feet because they are buried in water and possibly sand. His dark eye shines in the sun. The shot is taken at a low angle so the background is light blue sky.

And then there were two! I waited about an hour and a half mostly staring at the reeds, and finally a Sora popped out. And then another one popped out! And then they went for a swim! The female is in front on the left and the male is behind. More in alt text. #Birds 🪶
A pair of Soras swim in the green coloured water of a prairie marsh. They are small members of the Rail family and usually walk among the reeds, but they also like to swim. They have mottled brown feathers, a grey chest and a candy corn beak. The female on the left has a slightly less bold and thinner black chest and face stripe. The male is a bit behind her, on the right and his black stripe is bolder and thicker. He’s also slightly larger.

This is a cinnamon-brown bird with a grey back and a pale yellow chest. It has waxy red tips on the tips of a few wing covert feathers, an upswept crest of feathers on its head and a black mask over its eyes. It has a short, pointed black bill. It is stupidly beautiful.

In panel 2 there's a female red-winged blackbird labeled "orange-winged brownbird". In panel 3 there's a female black-throated blue warbler labeled "not-black throated" and "maybe some blue if you squint". In panel four there's a female scarlet tanager labeled "not scarlet" and "also, if we're being technical, not a tanager". In panel 5 there's a female red-cockaded woodpecker labeled "no red cockade" and "what even is a cockade?" and "don't worry about it". In the 6th panel there's a female northern cardinal labeled "mostly brown, despite being named for the red outfits worn by Catholic Cardinals" and "not allowed to become pope".
