There's something genuinely fascinating about the most unpopular President since Nixon feeling some kind of solidarity with Nixon and shackling himself to the very symbol of Presidential unpopularity even further just out of pure principle that no Republican should ever be punished for anything.

"they really believe it"/"they will try to do it"/"the promises are real" are things that most americans refuse to believe about politicians but if you take them seriously will help you predict political behavior more often than not

One of these proposals I absolutely DO NOT support is jungle/nonpartisan primaries. In 2019-20 I volunteered for 2020 question 2 which would have instituted RCV. This year we MUST reject question 3, which would impose a worse system on Massachusetts elections and fix nothing.

the thing about stuff like this is that five biggest changes in american politics have all been partisan projects The Constitution, the Jacksonian Revolution, Reconstruction, the New Deal, and Civil Rights were all explicitly partisan projects.

While I support some proposals to reform American elections to allow for more participation from independents or minor parties, modern American major parties are remarkably malleable institutions and you‘re usually better off finding or making space in one’s coalition.

Interesting to see one of the Bay State’s most notorious people, disgraced electric chair technician and Holocaust denier Fred Leuchter, come up again in an interview about the cruelty and unreliability of capital punishment. It’s life and death in the hands of fallible people and sketchy equipment.

One of the most powerful things you can do is volunteer for a campaign, particularly a local one, because seeing a friend, neighbor, or family member - or someone perceived like one - speak for a cause is far more effective than any online/tv ad or campaign mail.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

I talk about this a lot in "Lost Worlds" - the world didn't begin with people alive today, and it won't end with people today. Apocalypticism is a wonderful way of making it so you don't have to think about the real long-term consequences of your actions. If it's all going to end, why think further?

Having been severely depressed before, this is not being realistic, it’s not insight, it’s being severely depressed. It’s normal to feel like this right after something terrible happens. Feeling like it every day is your brain lying to you, and you help no one telling those lies to everyone else.

These are really exciting polls and all but we've got more work to do to actually get everyone over the line in November. I'm cramming graphic design and voter data work for a state senator in at midnight on a week day between my day job and spending all weekend getting my house ready for the baby.

Okay, so I have a plan to get everyone on our side. First, we be absolutely as viscerally unpleasant as possible. Next, we downplay any time we get what we want, say it's the bare minimum and so forth. Finally, if anyone gives up and says we win or apologizes, we belittle them.

This has been an ongoing morass and I've largely been off here for the last week because there's nothing to be done about it. A lot of people are determined to sink and don't want a hand out of the water or even the suggestion that they just try swimming themselves.

Something like "don't take fire prevention tips from arsonists" is common wisdom in politics. You have to identify who wants to see you fail, and ignore their input. You should also think very carefully about this before you say, out loud in public, that you want to see someone fail.

There are 3 questions to be answered by the 2026 US Senate election: 1) Are the goals of the Republican majority right for America? 2) Should Trump have a free hand to make lifetime court appointments in 2027 & 28? 3) Since these terms are through 2032, what power will the *next* president have?
