Affective polarization and the support for populist and technocratic governance - Sarah Engler, Ivo Bantel, Lucas Leemann, 2026

This shows that the effect of AP on governance preferences is not straightforward (also we do not find that high levels of AP lead to lower support for liberal democracy, but see also @lisajanssen.bsky.social and @turkenburgemma.bsky.social work on this), but largely depends on the supply side. 4/4

Sarah Engler @saengler.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
While non-populist voters with high levels of AP are more likely to support technocracy as a way to implement "the best solution", voters of the populist radical right are more likely to support direct democracy which is presented by populist parties as a way to implement "the general will". 3/4

Sarah Engler @saengler.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
We argue (and show empirically) that AP increases anti-pluralist attitudes, which translates into support for less pluralist forms of governance. Which type of governance people prefer, however, is largely driven by the supply side. 2/4

Radical right parties in Europe have not moderated. Their positions and rhetoric have entered the mainstream. They have become normalized and legitimized. Unless we understand this, we have little chance of countering their success.

In line with the 'credibility revolution', we are thinking about research designs that allow us to get closer to causal effects. Those who use surveys have often turned to survey experiments. At the same time, survey response rates have dropped considerably. Below are the figures for the ESS.
This plot shows average response rates of the European Social Survey. Between 2002 and 2023 the have fallen from 61 to 41 per cent. This plot breaks down ESS response rates by country. In almost all countries, the rate has gone down over time - in some cases, like Sweden, quite dramatically so.
