This is the primary thing I liked about Gemini when I had a Pro trial free from buying my Pixel phone. It answered the question, succinctly, without tangents, and then stopped without trying to encourage me to ask a bunch of follow-up questions.

Some of them clearly already do try to optimize for more usage, like how Copilot always insists on going on 8 tangents I didn't ask about, but at least it does usually answer the actual question somewhere in there.

I absolutely think the frontier US cloud AI companies would already be trying to enshittify like this if it weren't for the challenge of open models giving users other choices.

Having children feel safe & welcome as full participants as part of our churches on Sunday morning is more important than an adult’s preference for things that cater to them. We’re the adults. They’re the kids. Let’s stop throwing our selfish, self-serving tantrums.

Many of the worst AI boosters have an unspoken assumption that the goal is more stuff for the sake of more stuff. But why? We'll never read or watch or listen to it. It's just in the way of the quality stuff.

Work IT just sent out an email saying “Stop clicking on web ads and pop ups” with info about fake download/error buttons, etc. I (not-IT) want to just tell them “You either deploy adblockers or you deploy malware” but will probably have to find a gentler way to do so.

I do really hope the candidate who proposed a 15km/h speed limit on the trail made a typo and meant 25 (otherwise she seems good).

The US oligarchs don't only control the US government; they have a massive influence over pretty much the entire world. Maybe we should try allowing some of our companies to compete with them instead of anti-circumvention laws, or at minimum move our governments away from giving them more power?

Not that Toronto is perfect when it comes to cars by any means, but I see pictures like this and am so thankful that all the Toronto teams either play right beside the big central train station or one train stop away on the most busy line.

The government of self-professed fiscal responsibility and congestion relief is setting millions of dollars on fire to tear up our provincial capital's busiest roads and make congestion far worse, all because of a manufactured culture war that a rounding error of residents care about.

But these are for the manliest of manly men who want to spend 30% of their income looking tough instead of on their families. Scooters and bikes are just for women and the poors and the disabled, right? We barely count. (Not to do an "everything is gender" meme, but yeah, it kind of is)

I mostly listen to podcasts rather than music, so the couple times a month I do put on music I usually just hit the Supermix button on YouTube Music and trust the all-spying Google algorithm to give me something good enough. That seems pretty biased to what I have already liked, ie not new stuff.

talking about water use policy is impossible because "AI data centers use a lot of water to cool the computers" sounds way more believable than "they're draining the Great Salt Lake so the Governor of Utah can sell alfalfa to Saudi Arabia" and yet

the reason the water thing annoys me so much is that there are real water issues that need to be solved and water issues at scale are "it's the agriculture, stupid" and the data center water freakouts convince people that those issues can be solved by data center moratoriums that is simply wrong

What the death part adds is that a lot of people talk themselves into keeping clutter just in case their kids want it, and most of the time, no they don't, just get rid of it and make your life and their time after your life easier.

Ryan Robinson @ryanrobinson.ca · 27/09/2026
I listened to a book on it and came away thinking the "your kids won't want this after you're dead" part was mostly a mental motivation trick to make your life less cluttered in ways that you probably should anyway. For me "I don't want to have to move this to a new house" is just as effective.

I often think about the speed camera chopping vigilante who returned to the scene of their crime on Parkside Drive multiple times but Toronto police didn’t catch them & it led to Doug Ford banning speed cameras for 16 million people & now speeding is at epidemic levels & people will die.

Big tech decides, it ain't regulated, and we have to live with the results. They have appointed themselves masters of our lives, whether in the private or public sphere. And they continue to do that while we distract ourselves by arguing the specifics of each solution, how bad it is or isn't...

You're not alone on this one. This has been my biggest rant about all things "AI" for however many years it has now been: (most of) you aren't upset about machine learning or data centres; you're upset at big tech control. Let's talk about that directly.

This is the Trump "Trade Deficit" stupidity rephrased in a more wordy argument. The problem with AI Data Centers has nothing to do with with either AI, profit, or Data Centers. It's about the unregulated power and control that large tech companies have to make decisions for all of society.
