Dolly Parton did all the good she could, for all the people she could, for as long as ever she could. From her legendary songwriting to the Imagination Library—which sent 1 million books a month to children across the country—she was the best of America. Dolly, we'll miss your great heart.

Littwin: Lynn Bartels was the greatest political reporter I ever knew. And that’s not even half the story.
Lynn Bartels was one of one, a legend, who dominated state politics like no reporter before or since. And I was her friend — one of a million.

Lindsey Graham spent the last decade of his life in public service as a US Senator, trying hard to be remembered as an enemy of the Constitution who worked to destroy American democracy and exhibited occasional signs that he knew why that was bad but kept doing it anyway. I will honor his choice.

Indeed. We are not forcing upon Graham the memory of him being a villain, a coward, and a malignant presence in the country; that was the legacy he chose again and again. He earned our contempt, as has everyone else on his path.

You know what I haven't missed? All the betting commercials during the World Cup. Are you paying attention NBA, NFL? This is the new beer and cigarettes. It'll take us too long to catch up as a society to the dangers. The NFL staying at arms-length with Soresby, but he won't be the last

Just 10 people have already poured $617 MILLION into this year’s midterm elections. In the entire 2008 presidential cycle, the last election before Citizens United, total billionaire spending was $16 million. This is not sustainable. We need to get Big Money out of our democracy.

If you were to count out a million seconds, it would take you 11 and a half days. A billion seconds would take you 31.7 years. But a trillion seconds would take 31,700 years — to reach that point today, you would have needed to start counting around the time that neanderthals went extinct.

there aren’t many things i’m more “old man yells at clouds” about than kid sports. when i grew up your town had a team, you played on it with your friends and that was that. now i’m getting sold $950 lacrosse club team offers from a guy who claims to have noticed my kid at a practice she wasn’t at.

Calling the traveling violations is fine. But if the coverage gives equal weight to the travels and the flagrant fouls, the public walks away with a distorted picture of the game. Neutrality in tone is not the same thing as neutrality in impact.

If one team is repeatedly crossing serious lines and the other is committing comparatively minor infractions, proportionality matters. Journalism is not about symmetrical criticism. It’s about accurate accountability.

Is the ref’s job to “balance” the whistle so both sides feel equally scrutinized? Or is the job to call the game as it’s actually being played?

Kyle, I generally respect your work, which is why this framing is frustrating. Imagine Team Red and Team Blue are playing a basketball game. Team Red commits 100 flagrant fouls. Team Blue commits five traveling violations. 1/x

The only offense the Patriots had was when the play broke down and Maye picked up yardage with his feet. Seattle playing predominately zone, so he’s not getting those looks as much.

It’s an atrocious money grab. It make sense in futbol, where different leagues play each other’s teams. For a league that rests it stars in the name of “load management,” it makes zero sense.
