It's true & really, putting everything into atProto built me a larger follower base than any Meta platform, any Google platform & Twitter ever did while not aiming for that. However, creators & consumers will have to interact differently to get that, as algorithms won't read their intent for them.

I think many people feel this but are unable to reconcile that connecting to each other is both an inalienable right and necessity to us as humans, and costly at scale. We need and deserve connecting to be free and accessible to all, but in its current state, it exists b/c its a marketing tool.

I want so badly for all social media to transition to the Atmosphere, but: 1. The masses have no idea what the Atmosphere is 2. Devs are struggling to fund their projects 3. Any replacement must exceed the former’s capabilities to win people over. An uphill battle for a solo, underfunded team.

I deactivated my Instagram on January 1st. I was surprised at how little temptation there was for me to ever go back. The only reason it's deactivated still instead of deleted entirely is I have long been planning to plug @grain.social once when private data arrives and then just nuke the account.

Meta already decided for me they wanted me off IG, so I surely won’t be creating another account. Barely even want to be on FB. Especially if everything will be run by AI and you can’t even talk to a real person to appeal/they don’t allow you to input feedback for an appeal.

thankfully deleting ig was easy for me (i made an account for wedding vendor research & that's all i used it for), but as an elder millennial deleting facebook was hard. literal decades of info/photos/connections that used to mean a lot. but it's now net harmful & terrible, so it had to go

Yeah but we DID move. We literally started using Facebook less & less around 2011. Mark Zuckerberg freaked out about losing the 18 to 35 crowd & so he bought Instagram. Then WhatsApp. THAT was the problem. We can hop platforms all the live long day but as long as companies are allowed to eat....

@blackskyweb.xyz's account onboarding for new accounts is so nice. I missed the pictures but the very first slide was on the community labeler and guidlines. They do a great job highlighting other apps on the Atmosphere and that their account works everywhere, default For You feed as well

Without question, Blacksky. I had a really negative experience with Bluesky and its staff before the site even dropped, so it felt it was gonna be more of the same that we’ve already seen. It wasn’t until I read about Blacksky and its ideas that I become curious about AtProto.
