An Irish #painting. "Sligo Sunset" came out of a time I was in the northwest feeling alone and happy as I looked across Sligo Bay from Strandhill at Blackrock lighthouse and beyond to the glory of Donegal. The sun was going down but it came up again the next day. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Wide panoramic format in acrylics. View across lilac water past a narrow strip of black rocks reaching out from the right. A white and black lighthouse stands centre-right close to far edge of the water where behind it there is a low strip of land running horizontally across the whole painting, slightly higher on right tapering down to slightly lower at the left edge, made of a patchwork of olive green fields, and topped with a line of dark trees that are silhouetted against in the distance a large long blue shape of a mountain ridge that tapers down at either end. Behind it the sky is pale yellow and above the mountain the sky is in rising bands of orange, pink and lilac. Signed bottom right in dark blue, Liam Daly

A west Cork #painting "Red Strand Rocks" was painted one magical sunny day sitting for hours with my bicycle on a bluff above a beach. At one point mid-painting I lay down and closed my eyes for a pleasant sleep. Afterwards I cycled to Clonakilty and handed over the painting. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. The blue water of a bay comes in from the left between a headland along the horizon and in the foreground rocks in a series of strata extending into water. The headland juts out from right, has green fields and hedgerows tumbling down to jagged dark rocky edge by water. White tip of lighthouse peeps over left end slope, and a long white house is low down close to the water at the right edge of the painting. Rock strata are blue, grey, dark wine and purple with the lines running from the bottom straight up the centre of the picture breaking up in the water. They run from the entire width of the bottom edge of the painting and extend up loosely in a triangle. Sand is to left of rocks and a grass-topped ochre-grey bluff to right. Sky is a painterly yellow with paler indications of clouds. Signed top left, Liam Daly

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

A #painting of some birds. "Rooks, Wires, Hedgerow" came out of a menacing afternoon when I cycled around West Cork. The coastline looked magnificent but I spent a lot of time looking at rooks. In general you can't go too far wrong when you spend a lot of time looking at rooks. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on mixed media paper. Against a dark cloudy sky of lilac and blue a dark wooden telegraph pole rises from the busy thicket of a hedgerow and tilts to the left. On the wires it supports, both left and right, and on the supporting wires, are about two dozen rooks. Birds and pole are silhouetted; hedgerow is a mess of tangled lines, mostly black but with some blue, pale green and dark red also. The hedgerow runs across the full width of the painting, occupying about a quarter of the bottom albeit slightly sloping up from left to right, much like the wires at the top of the picture attached to either side of the main pole. A second pole is in the distance by the left edge. Signed bottom right in pale green, Liam Daly

A #painting from the west of Ireland again. "Broadhaven Bay" came from a time I was cycling up the very top of north Mayo and as I cycled alongside the bay I was arrested by its patterns and colours so I just looked. Also, the wind was fantastic which always helps me to stop. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in mostly flat acrylics. A field of yellow orange in the foreground runs across the bottom in a very narrow triangular wedge. It has a blue-poled wire fence running along its edge and just behind it on the left is a small pile of wine-coloured turf. Beyond it running across the picture in a wide band is a teal inlet, with rocky small cliff edges which are dark purple and wine on the right half, and further back on the left half they are lilac and white with a pink strand in a small cove. The cliffs are topped with a patchwork of varying green fields leading up a slope to a small settlement of little white houses at the top from which the blue hedgerows radiate down. Behind the houses peeps the top of a high cliff of very pale pink with blue shadows, and above it is a narrow strip of blood-orange sky. Signed bottom left, Liam Daly

A #painting from somewhere in Ireland. "Ruined House". Before my longer cycling adventures I used to do countless single day loops from home of anything up to over 200 km, stopping to eat sandwiches, to sketch, or to look at birds, trees, and buildings in need of love. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas panel. A patchwork of cloudy lime green fields sloping down from the left to the right. Fields are separated by thin dark green hedgerows with sporadic bushes that have soft curved edges. Hints of red peep through the dark green hedgerows. The titular house is just lust left of centre, grey and missing a roof, with its gable end on the left in blue shadow, as is the top of the left side of the inside of the gable at the right end and two internal walls. To the right of it is a large wide grey industrial shed with the left sloping roof very pale. The sky is rows of smokey white clouds on pale blue with the undercoat of red showing through in parts as a feint pink. Signed bottom left, Liam

A little #painting that took a long time. "Flower, Mountain" came from when I lived in north Donegal and with my little dog would walk for hours under very dark clouds. This little plant with its golden flowers coped a lot better than either of us did with the very strong wind. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on paper textured for acrylic painting. On the left a stalky green plant with 6 small bright yellow flowers stands up out of long grass while behind it is a ridge of undulating green hills and directly behind the flowers in bold contrast is a broody turquoise sky. To the right on the horizon is a whale-shaped light violet mountain. The long grass of the bottom third is violet and dark greens all leaning to the right, with highlights of light turquoise bending in arcs to the right. Signed bottom right in orange, Liam Daly

A #painting from the mountains in the east of Ireland now. One day a long time ago I cycled 24 km to Glenasmole Valley, where I painted this view of Bohernabreena Reservoir and Kippure, before handing "Glenasmole" to its new owner and cycling another 24 km on into Kildare. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Wide landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. View across body of water to hills and mountains. Nearest hill has bottom half covered in evergreen trees, rendered in blues and purples as well as greens; and top half a patchwork of lime fields with darker hedgerows and trees separating. A round hill is behind it, which is dark brown-green, and beyond it to the left is a flattish purple mountain with an antenna on its bump of a peak. Water of the reservoir across the bottom of the painting is dark blue where reflecting mass of trees and the dark hill, sparkling light blue in foreground, and a strip of brilliant white to the left at its furthest away point. Sky is yellow with smokey white mixed in. Signed top left in red, Liam Daly

Another west of Ireland #painting. "Galway Bay Rocks I" came from a moment where I was cycling from Galway city to Connemara and stopped when I saw a bunch of kids sitting on a large boulder. It made me remember how fantastic it was to be young. Beside that scene was this one. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Foreground is edge of ochre beach running across full width of painting, then a band of purple rocks of all sizes including one large boulder to the right, with all rocks having violet shadow sides facing viewer. Beyond the band of rocks the bay is teal, with a criss-crossing pattern of white ripples in the near part, and darker teal in the distance. Two more strips of lilac rocks with dark blue shadows stretch out from the left edge tapering to almost the right edge. On horizon is a large grey mountain cropped on the left near its peak and on the right close to its lowest slope by the water. It has feint maroon striping and as it descends from its peak by the left edge down to the horizon at the right side of the painting, its edges are curved at different layers representative of the strata of rock that form the mountains in County Clare. Behind its lowest parts on the right is a distant small pale blue mountain. Sky is a very pale mixture of grey, white and teal. Signed bottom right, Liam Daly

A County Kerry #painting. "Looscaunagh Lough" I painted based on a day where I had been painting in Kenmare then packed up and cycled up into the mountains, over Moll's Gap and up there, high above Killarney National Park, I stopped by this lake. Because hey. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Glimmering lake, with reeds running across the foreground of varying greens, from off-white to warm olive to loud green to almost blue, some topped with small brown balls. There are uneven yellow-green grass slopes on the left leading to rocks in the water. The far side of the lake in a band running horizontally across the centre has lime grassy slopes, dark green bushes mostly on the right, and further back rocky olive outcrops with a large clump of dark blue-green pine trees peaking on a mound right of centre with several orange brown long vertical trunks visible at the bottom of that peak. The water has dark bands of reflections of the dark trees between the sparkling very pale blue and white areas. There are also some touches of horizontal strokes of lilac particularly in the foreground. Sky is very pale blue save for feint white fluffy clouds. Signed top left in turquoise, Liam Daly

Another west of Ireland #painting "Westport, High Street" came from a time I was cycling in County Mayo and after climbing up this hill I stopped because I was feeling a bit blue. And yellow and purple. Westport is beautiful from so many angles; I'll be painting it again #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Scape
Landscape format in painterly acrylics. Under a canary smoky yellow sky with touches of orange breaking through, we are looking downhill at the far side of a street of 2-story houses stepping down, most of which are in pale yellows, with pale purple and blue slate roofs that have touches of navy, and red indicating the slates, and are punctuated by white and yellow chimneys. Only the path of the left side of the street is visible by the left edge of the painting, until the bottom of the hill when the street bends right bringing the houses on the left side into view. Road surface is blue with central dashed white line, and paths are bright yellow with a tall dark streetlamp in the left foreground. Cars parked on both sides mostly in whites and blues. Small narrow trees with sparse green foliage are dotted along both sides of the street, but at the top on the right side is a large tree having dark foliage of violet and blue and some red highlights that reaches the top of the painting. Purple and blue roofs of other streets are at bottom of hill punctuated by glimpses of yellow gables and a couple of taller green square buildings with roofs. On far side of town is a mass of trees of violet and dark blue across the full width of the painting. Beyond is a flat-topped hill with a parallel row of grey-green fields. In this distance on the horizon are pale blue rounded hills on the right and a soft pyramidal one in the centre. Signed bottom right in dark blue on the pale blue road surface, Liam Daly

Another west of Ireland #painting "Enniscrone Beach" is a place I get to go every year, and this painting was one of a set of four celebrating it. Like the others it was a gift for those that gift me the opportunity to experience the wonder of the place. #SpéirGhorm #TidesOutTuesday #ArtYear
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas panel. View from long yellow grass on top of dune down onto a long strand bending in the distance to the right with sea coming in from right. Two very large dunes are at the back in the distance on the left with a line of lower dunes in front, and a line of orange shading where they meet the strand. Beyond along horizon stretching off to the right are low hills of blues, with a dark blue low hill at right edge. Sky is blue and the lower half is full of white fluffy clouds. Foreground dune grass blades are ochre, yellow, white, and in shadow red and blue. Sand is creams and lilac. Water is same pale blue as sky. Clouds are white at top of fluffy shape and pale lilac under. Signed top left in dark red, Liam Daly

Posted this in the bad place ages back but it is my duty to inform EVERYONE of how jealous Kelsey Grammer was of the Frasier dog
"It's widely rumored that I hate the dog, and it's kind of fun to perpetuate the myth. The truth is, I have nothing against Moose. The only difficulty I have is when people start believing he's an actor. Acting to me is a craft, not a reflex. It takes years to master, and though it does have its rewards, the reward I seek is not a hot dog. Moose does tricks; I memorize lines, say words, even walk around and stuff. But I don't need a trainer standing off-camera, gesticulating wildly and waving around a piece of meat, to know where I'm supposed to look."

Read More: https://www.slashfilm.com/1452879/frasier-co-star-frustrated-kelsey-grammer/But one voice is conspicuously absent from that EW feature: the actor most frequently upstaged by the deadpan dog. "I do draw the line when somebody says, 'Oh, he's such a good little actor,'" Kelsey Grammer told Washington Post TV critic Tom Shales prior to Frasier's second season. The quotes about Moose in the Post profile could be read as a peevish sitcom star blowing off steam, but in Shales' telling, it sounds like there's real annoyance at work. Shales describes Grammer "slamming his hand on the table" hard enough to jiggle a bowl of guacamole as he proclaims, "That's it! He's not an actor, he's a dog!"

A #painting from Ireland's southwest. "Skibbereen, Main Street" came from a moment when I arrived by bicycle in the west Cork town facing these four fabulous buildings so I stayed there stopped, sitting on my saddle, just staring until I had painted them in my head. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #UrbanGaze
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. Front view of terrace of four 3-story buildings with shop fronts at street level. Upper stories of leftmost building is light brown with "C Connolly" on fascia of maroon and peach shopfront, next is taller and blue-green with no signage visible on its grey-green shopfront, next is yellow and same height as blue-green one, with "Pierce Hickey" on white fascia below a clock and line of flowers and above the shopfront of orange trim, and rightmost is a lower height and a very pale blue, almost white. Each building is two window bays wide save for the rightmost which is cropped at the third window. The rightmost building has gold lettering of Field's Coffee on its dark green fascia and below it the windows and doors are all topped with white arches. All windows of upper stories have white trim, with the first story of the two central buildings having a white triangle over each. All roofs are slate of a smokey blue violet, and chimneys a muted grey-green and purple. Sky is painterly orange, more yellow lower down beyond the left edge of the leftmost building. Foreground is street surface of purple brushed brokenly over red with a triangular turquoise traffic island housing two planters of blooming flowers, a street sign and directional signs. A very old but favourite #painting. "Four Courts, No Trees" was painted because I love Dublin's Four Courts. When you can see it. Felt a pang when it sold. Not the best photo of it because this was painted over 30 years ago when I freely roamed the city, but you get the idea. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in watery loose acrylics on mixed media paper. View across Dublin's River Liffey diagonally northeast to where the large dome-topped neoclassical building that is the Four Courts stands left of centre. It has a front-facing portico of Corinthian columns. On the triangular pediment above there are statues on the top central corner and each of the bottom corners. The wide dome is behind sitting on a wide cylindrical drum with columns and windows. Left and right of the portico are arched windows and more columns on the main central structure, with attached to either side is wall with arched openings and topped, like the central structure with a balustrade, as it screens off a courtyard to either side of the central structure. Both screening walls have a large central arch which are topped with carved sculptures. Columns, screen walls, and details are rendered in yellow with red being the colour of shadows and purple that of the sides of buildings facing into the courtyards. Touches of blue-grey are on the drum under the dome and parts of the tops of the central structure and the building to the right of the rights screening wall. The building to the left of the left screening wall is cropped out of picture. Distant buildings further away along the quay are suggestive strokes of yellow and orange. The river wall of magenta topped with a yellow balustrade runs in front of the Four Courts and the river reflects in a gently wobbly fashion the building above in slightly darker colours. An arched magenta bridge of 3 arches is down river with a loose suggestion of the distant skyline. Water that is not a reflection is rippling blue-grey with red highlights. The sky is a sunset pattern of scattered smokey pale blue grey clouds on top of yellow, orange and pink. Loose black outlines give shape to most forms. The curved magenta top of the near wall is in the bottom right corner. I took this photo before I signed the painting.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other new technology could be used to improve detection of cars driving the wrong way on motorways.

The scope for introducing such technology on Irish roads was discussed at a meeting of senior leaders of the Road Safety Authority (RSA), An Garda Síochána and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) following the fatal M9 crash this month.

Plans were announced after the meeting for harsher penalties for “aggravated” dangerous driving, including deliberately driving the wrong way down a motorway, under legislation due to be enacted before the end of this year.

Minister of State at the Department of Transport Seán Canney said officials would next week start work on stricter laws for those who “deliberately put other people’s lives at risk”.

A County Clare #painting. "Burren Tower" was painted after several visits to the land of hypnotic fields of limestone karst, where I'd also visit the Atlantic - for chowder, chips, and the coastal views. Shanmuckinish Castle is one of countless tower houses that litter the area. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas panel. View down a burnt orange boreen on the left, between walled fields of green, to a ruin of a tall narrow castle-like tower house, rendered in greys of lilac and blue, as is the surround wall of the lot where it stands. Behind it is a very pale blue and green inlet, and a headland projecting out to the left in warm green and orange with some fields, four clumps of probably trees of dark reddish brown, and its softly curved upper slopes topped with lilac horizontal stone. In the foreground a dry stone wall, of purple stones with blue shadows between, drops down along the right side of the boreen and bends to the right where the edge of a modern white house with lilac roof can be seen. Sky is very pale blue in upper left, and lower down and to the right a pale yellow - almost white closer to the horizon. Photo was taken before painting was signed.

An Irish #painting. "Frank Sherwin Bridge" came from what used to be my normal existence of walking the streets of Dublin for hours several times a week. The western end of the River Liffey in town I've always loved probably because edges are exciting. My only painting to feature gulls. #SpéirGhorm
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. View diagonally along the peach and lilac river from behind a granite stone quayside wall rendered in maroon and capped with lilac curved stones. The view extends to a flat road lilac bridge and beyond the far lilac river wall on the right to some old street buildings among a cluster of dark green trees on Parkgate Street. Rising up behind Parkgate Street, and dwarfing it, is a large modern wide cylindrical building of dark blue glass topped with lilac stone, while to its left from behind a low wide orange building and tops of distant pale blue trees, rises the lilac stone obelisk shape of the Wellington Testimonial in the Phoenix Park. Two gulls are on the wall in the foreground. Sky is blotchy yellow. I took this photo of the painting before I added my signature.

been reading university/higher-ed policies on the use of genAI in education. most policies propose using genAI safely, ethically, & responsibly, which is an oxymoron. the way current genAI is developed, deployed & functions renders the very ideas of safety, ethics, and responsible use meaningless

Although my university is all in on AI (eg, there's a pilot with OpenAI to provide free, unlimited access to ChatGPT-4o), I've had a few students who have deliberately avoided using it for any purpose at all (I also don't use it) It looks like there are real benefits to NOT using AI for learning

Pretty sure Skinner's defence had previously been used by J.M. Baldwin on his arrest in an incident that led to J.B. Watson becoming Head of Psychology at Johns Hopkins

One for fans of data visualisation & snooker: made some small (~25cm) snooker tables with corkboard & felt. Used coloured pins & thread to represent Cliff Thorburn's 1983 max 147 at the Crucible, & then Ronnie O'Sullivan's fastest 147 in 5 mins 8 seconds from 1997. #datavisualisation #snooker
