There are still a few days to send in your comments to the city if you haven’t yet! If you are tired of waiting over 20 freaking years for some affordable housing to be built, then click below today and use our tool to send a message! Or email them directly at OFH_comments@seattle.gov

For folks testifying, a reminder that is happening *tomorrow* (8/27), starting at 10 AM (virtual) and noon (in-person), while written comments will still be accepted until Sept. 8. It shouldn't take over twenty years to build a housing project, but we can still get this one across the finish line.

INBOX: Journalists at the five McClatchy newspapers in Washington and Idaho (the Idaho Statesman, Bellingham Herald, Tri-City Herald, Tacoma News Tribune and The Olympian) are calling a one-day strike today over wages and AI protections. That means no clicking on any links to their sites for today.
A screenshot of an email that says "We've had enough of McClatchy's bad faith bargaining."Text from an email that reads:

"Hi friend,

We're officially on strike. Journalists across Idaho and Washington's five McClatchy papers are calling a one-day unfair labor practice strike today, May 26, to show our hedge-fund owned company that there is no paper without us.

We're the ones chasing lawmakers down at our state capitol buildings. We're the ones listening to local business owners, attending court hearings to get the full story on crime and diving headfirst into why traffic is worse.

Yet our corporate owners won't even send their decision-makers to the bargaining table to deny our reasonable requests for a living wage and AI protections."Text from an email that reads:

"But we need your help.
Don't cross the virtual picket line today. Don't click on links for the Idaho Statesman, Bellingham Herald, Tri-City Herald, Tacoma News Tribune or The Olympian.

Show McClatchy that you know you deserve reliable information, not AI slop. You want to know what's happening in your community, good or bad, and that's not possible if reporters can't afford to live where they cover.

Sign the pledge to not cross the virtual picket line and help us in our fight for a fair contract!"

The legislation comes amid a heated debate among major real estate players over private listings. The dispute is especially fraught in Washington, where private listings are already rare.

Good news: HB 2304, which exempts condo buildings of up to 4 stories and 12 units from Washington’s strict condo liability regime, has passed the House! It moves on to the Senate. If it passes there, it’ll be time to move on to the harder work of reforming liability for larger buildings.

“For families like the Cornejos, who waited years to close their Habitat home in Seattle, every month of delay means another month of housing instability. Redundant reviews slow housing production without improving environmental outcomes,” Makinster said.

Who calls the shots where you get your news?

Is it the dull, eyebrowless son of one of the richest men in the world? Is it shareholders, for whom it's expedient to roll over in the face of nuisance lawsuits by the gangster state? Is it one of the private equity firms grinding media companies to dust to eke out returns?

Is it someone who will fire a journalist for accurately describing Charlie Kirk’s beliefs? Is it a severely confused Brit? Is it the “rogue employee” who reprogrammed their company’s chatbot to urgently inform users about the “white genocide happening in South Africa”?

Not if you read Defector. The 27 of us who work here own the company together. We have no outside investors, so we have no mandate to maximize shareholder value. We don’t take money from gambling companies. We aren’t out to fatten up and get acquired.

Defector is uncompromised, a rarity in modern media. When we report, criticize, and analyze, it’s coming from us, not someone upstairs. We answer only to our subscribers. Become one!
