My first photo subject of 2026! Happy new year everyone #birds
A juvenile reddish egret standing in shallow water, body facing right, looking straight down into the water, long daggerlike beak nearly perfectly vertical. This bird is very unusually colored; he has a pale chalky blue and tan back, steel blue undersides, a reddish neck, and dark green legs. His beak is light at the base but is mostly dark overall, and you can see a reflection of the tip of his beak. The water is calm and light blue.

In which I finally put that absurd 2013 WSJ graphic to good use
Twelve years ago, the Wall St. Journal ran a story about the impact of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, which was a sweeping tax bill signed into law by President Obama which locked in the Bush tax cuts for lower & middle-class households while allowing them to expire on schedule for wealthier Americans: A compromise measure, the Act gives permanence to the lower rate of much of the Bush tax cuts, while retaining the higher tax rate at upper income levels that became effective on January 1 due to the expiration of the Bush tax cuts. It also establishes caps on tax deductions and credits for those at upper income levels. It does not tackle federal spending levels to a great extent, rather leaving that for further negotiations and legislation. The American Taxpayer Relief Act passed by a wide majority in the Senate, with both Democrats and Republicans supporting it, while most of the House Republicans opposed it. The WSJ story, titled "How Much Will Your Taxes Jump?," led to widespread derision at the time for wringing its hands over wealthy people having to go back to (gasp) paying a few percent more of their sky-high incomes in taxes.

Child liberation theology is not about abstract ideas but rather the simple yet radical act of treating children humanly and justly—something Fred Rogers took seriously.

Back on the south coast of England visiting family. Thanks to @irishrainforest.bsky.social and others I now look at landslip forests in a completely fresh way. It's amazing to see what grows on a landslip in a decade while it's out of the reach of grazing animals and human intervention.
Picture of a decade old landslip over the edge of a clifftop on the Dorset coast in England. A rich variety of plant life grows above the sea.

The smears against Zohran coming from the Democratic establishment are also a sign of fear—they’re more scared of the party becoming progressive than they are of the country already being fascist. If Zohran wins, it signals a reckoning. If Cuomo wins, they can keep the failing status quo intact.

Really dig Yuko Gunji, a kintsugi artist in NYC. Kintsugi is the Japanese method of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and gold. Instead of trying to make things look new again, it highlights the faults, showing how something can be beautiful even after it was broken. IG gunjiyuko.kintsugi
The caption from Instagram reads: "I was commissioned to create a gift for a 50th wedding anniversary. I repaired a large chipped piece of a tea bowl using urushi lacquer and decorated it with peonies and Karakusa using Maki-e. The white peony symbolizes a happy marriage, and the Karakusa represents vitality. I hope they will continue to spend many happy years together." The photo shows a light grey tea bowl with a gold colored repair. There are decorative florals. A painted ceramic has been repaired with gold lacquer. The repair looks like a leaf. A tea bowl has been repaired with gold lacquer. The lacquer covers the areas where the bowl was previously broken. A ceramic human skull is repaired with gold lacquer.

Sea monkeys! If only I'd had a microscope back when my sister and I had a tank of these guys. #InsertAnInvert2024 in 2025
Black and white pen and ink drawing of a brine shrimp. It is a female with a huge egg sac between her 11 legs and her tail. She also has cartoonish looking eye stalks and antennae. Handwritten text reads: #insertaninvert 19 Carcinization (not crab). Brine shrimp (Artemia sp.). When I was 8 or 9 years old we had a little tank of sea monkeys. I was so excited for them to arrive! I thought they would really be busy living their magical lives in their tiny yet magnificent kingdom. I was disappointed not to see them busy working, playing, and running schools and hospitals in there. On the whole, I prefer being grown up :-)

Every extra hour that ICE spends facing off with activists is an hour they can't spend kidnapping other people. Every extra minute ICE has to spend contingency planning around activists and neighbors, every extra officer ICE has to put on a kidnap squad, is a drain on their efficiency.
