Today is the feast of St Columba, the 6thC Irish missionary who founded Iona Abbey and was responsible for bringing Christianity to much of western Scotland. One of the best known depictions of the saint is this stained glass window by Douglas Strachan in St Margaret's Chapel in Edinburgh Castle.
A small stained glass window, shown filling a window in the deep walls of St Margaret's Chapel in the heart of Edinburgh Castle.

Designed by Douglas Strachan, it depicts St Columba at the prow of a boat, clasping a bible under his purple and blue cloak and shepherd's crook in his left hand. Behind him a partially obscured boatman appears to be rowing the ship to port.

At the bottom is a shield-shaped vision of St Columba as an old man, reading at a desk with an open door beside him, showing a building, perhaps Iona Abbey, under sunset sky.

The Cathedral That Swallowed the Sun Medieval stained glass was never a secondary embellishment added after architecture had completed its real work. In the Gothic cathedral, glass became one of architecture’s most powerful theological instruments.

This is exactly why language matters: “women were given the vote” frames equality as a gift from men, instead of hard won political power extracted through organized resistance. Nobody gave women anything. Women fought, marched, strategized, endured violence, went to prison and died for it.

Salisbury Cathedral restores stained-glass treasure by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris
Project to refurbish ‘Angels’ hailed huge success as dean says it will ‘lift spirits and rekindle hope’ Sam Kelly admitted there had been some nights of broken sleep as he led a two-year project to restore one of Salisbury Cathedral’s treasures, a stained-glass window by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. “It would be wrong to say I didn’t lie awake sometimes,” said the head glazier. “You are working on something that is very precious and if it fell on the floor, it would be very bad.” Continue reading...
