#OnThisDay 1902 Scotland’s William McGonagall died. He was widely acclaimed as the worst poet in history, and he composed many poems including about the Jacobite battle at Dunblane, "The Battle of Sheriffmuir"

It’s #WorldRiversDay today. River Allan or Allan Water through Dunblane provided power for mills in Dunblane since 15th century. In 1600 there were 7 corn mills and 3 waulk mills but by 1800 most of the mills of the area were spinning and weaving yarn and wool

#OnThisDay 1756 Scottish engineer & inventor of "tar macadam" road surface John McAdam was born. Dunblane roads did not begin to be surfaced until the beginning of the 20th century and these images illustrate roads in Dunblane prior to this time

#OnThisDay 1878 Dunblane Hydropathic Establishment (Dunblane Hydro Hotel) opened with grand ball. Building took 3 years, & cost £60,000. It was Victorian health spa resort for guests to enjoy local spring water & hydropathic treatments

On 11 Sep 1745 Charles Edward Stuart (Stuart claimant to the throne of Great Britain, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) spent a night in Dunblane at Balhaldie House as guest of Alexander Drummond of Balhaldie, prior to going on to the Battle of Prestonpans.

#OnThisDay 1891 Thomas Edison patented the motion picture camera. Dunblane's Victoria Hall had a projection box for showing films and the boarded up portholes can still be seen at the rear balcony.

#OnThisDay 1754 Scottish engineer & inventor of coal-gas lighting William Murdoch was born. This photograph of Dunblane's Millrow in 1876 shows old gas works - gas lighting introduced to Dunblane 1841. In 1906 gasometer was erected, demolished 1951, new gasometer cleared in 1970s
