Really, really enjoying The Salt Bind by Rebecca Ferrier. Cunning women, sea deities, folk horror, minoritised language… pretty much ticks every box for me 🌊💙

Diaspora identity is weird and always seemingly incomplete. No doubt the inherited 'Irishness' of the 2nd gen immigrant overseas is different to the lived 'Irishness' of someone raised there regardless of heritage. These are different claims on a culture. But neither of them are fictional!

From Wendell Berry's essay, "The Work of Local Culture"
"I was walking one Sunday afternoon several years ago with an older friend. We went by the ruining log house that had belonged to his grandparents and great-grandparents. The house stirred my friend's memory, and he told how the oldtime people used to visit each other in the evenings, especially in the long evenings of winter. There used to be a sort of institution in our part of the country known as "sitting till bedtime." After supper, when they weren't too tired, neighbors would walk across the fields to visit each other. They popped corn, my friend said, and ate apples and talked. They told each other stories. They told each other stories, as I knew myself, that they all had heard before. Sometimes they told stories about each other, about themselves, living again in their own memories and thus keeping their memories alive. Among the hearers of these stories were always the children. When bedtime came, the visitors lit their lanterns and went home. My friend talk about this, and thought abut it, and then he said, "They had everything but money."

Thank you, Wendell. Rest in peace. Your words will continue to blaze with wisdom and healing.
Photo of Wendell Berry's poem 'The Peace of Wild Things'
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Wendell Berry 💔 The Peace of Wild Things is one of my most cherished reading experiences. This poem in particular (not least because the 2nd of Feb is my birthday). The last line feels like a particularly important instruction right now.
A picture of a poem from the collection “The Peace of Wild Things” by Wendell Beery.

February 2nd, 1968

In the dark of the moon, in flying snow, in the dead of winter,
war spreading, families dying, the world in danger,
I walk the rocky hillside, sowing clover.

Nights and days of blinding rain, Atlantic lows sweeping across the carse trees and hills lost in thick noonday mist. Now this raw light and a hard Steppe wind pouring down Glen Tye towards the late sun… —Chris Powici, “The Wild Summer” from Talking About Lobsters: New Writing Scotland 34 #poem
Chris Powici
The Wid Summer

i.m. Angus Dunn

Nights and days of blinding rain, Atlantic lows
sweeping across the carse
trees and hills lost in thick noonday mist.

Now this raw light
and a hard Steppe wind pouring down Glen Tye
towards the late sun.

A raven lifts from a fencepost
and gives itself to the cold, marvellous air
pitching and wheeling
as if there’s no tomorrow, as if there’s
only ever hunger, longing, flight – here, now

and this, as you know, is the real poem Angus –
a lone dark bird telling the truth about the world
telling it well –
not these words

though, given time, I’ll get them as right as I can
even if there’s no raven, just skeins of autumn greylag
flowing calmly south.

Even if it’s way too late by then.

This girl I used to waitress with in Austin, we moved to New York together in 2003 on a literal Greyhound bus. Shared a fifth floor walk-up studio that, when it rained, had more leaks in the ceiling than we had pots and pans. We used to get drunk and smoke off the fire escape and do “sad-offs.”

Listen, if they do try to deny us treatment/take our adhd meds away, there’s been some small studies showing that high doses of saffron have similar effects (but with worse side effects and more drug interactions). Also, zinc is something you should all be taking anyway.

okay, here’s my take on the dobby’s grave thing: this country has a long and established history of memorialising popular fiction in society. Have you been to Whitby or Baker Street station recently? That part is fine. The problem is that the gov’t and media are allowing JKR to push transphobia.
