Let’s pretend for a second that this is physically feasible. Tesla, the electric vehicle company, have invested significant R&D into a new model that runs on fossil fuels?

I think he’s just being realistic there. He knows he will upset a lot of his regular readers, who skew liberal (he acquired a lot of them in the early days of Silicon Valley). I think he honestly believes what he’s saying. I just don’t understand the gaping blind spot from him of all people.

This does not track at all with his long history of very thoughtful commentary and contribution to the online world. I am confused that he’s got this so wrong but it absolutely isn’t performative stupidity.

It’s quite strange because he is generally a very thoughtful, switched-on observer of the online world. He’s a grandee of the whole space, partly as foundational contributor and partly as reporter. For him to have got this so badly wrong has me really flummoxed.

I’ve been aghast at the lack of leadership from Labour on this issue. Acting like a passive follower of public sentiment instead of people who have the power to shape it with positive messaging. Burnham’s proactivity is extremely welcome.

Presumably the strength of Reform, who would immediately reverse or derail any accession process if in power, would damp the appetite for it in Brussels?

The way the line keeps going up when it usually starts going down is more scary than the big peak. But is that normal for an El Niño year? Can we get a line for previous El Niño years for comparison?

I mean, that’s kind of it. When I’m asleep, my brain isn’t off. It’s doing things but the temporal continuity from when I’m awake is broken. It picks up where it left off when I wake up. One mode of working is conscious, the other is not.

Ross @roscola.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yeah exactly. My experience of consciousness seems to me to have a strong component of temporal continuity

They’re at best a cartoon model of the real thing. The way they actually function is very different. ANNs are basically static once trained, and encode their training only spatially. Real neurons use constantly dynamically changing voltages and represent “data” temporally, as patterns of firing.

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

Not the biggest point, obviously, but it’s hilarious that he thinks Spotify and Apple Music are who AI music would displace. Like the apocryphal city kids who think food is made in supermarkets.

Seems like it’s a zero-tolerance approach to time-wasters on dating apps. Liberal use of blocking forces the algorithm to suggest new profiles instead of recycling the same ones. Not as complex or sophisticated as the name implies but apparently quite effective.
