It’s hard enough for cities in Canada to do smarter things given how often bad city leaders hurt their own cities. But it’s extra infuriating watching awful provincial premiers sabotaging cities by ripping out good things they FINALLY managed to achieve. Premiers should not have that power, period.

October is LGBTQ+ History Month. The month celebrates the achievements, history and civil rights movements of the LGBTQ+ community. Today, it is the story of Jim Egan.
In 1986, Egan, who was self-employed much of his life, retired and applied for spousal benefits for Jack Nesbit, his partner of 40 years.
This was refused because they were a same sex couple. Egan launched a court case that made it to the Supreme Court.
While they lost their case, the court ruled to include sexual orientation as a prohibited grounds for discrimination under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This paved the way for the legalization of same sex marriage.

October is LGBTQ+ History Month. The month celebrates the achievements, history and civil rights movements of the LGBTQ+ community. Today, it is the story of Jane Rule.
In 1961, Jane Rule wrote her first novel, Desert of the Heart. Due to the fact it featured the story of two women who fell in love, it was rejected 22 times before it was published in 1964. It has received acclaim in recent years.
Throughout her life, Rule was a spokesperson and advocate for LGBTQ+ issues in Canada.
She wrote for the gay magazine The Body Politic, and was on the executive of the Writers’ Union of Canada.
She received the Order of Canada the year she died.

The grammatical 'colon' and the anatomical 'colon' are not etymologically related. The anatomical 'colon' comes from the Greek ‘kolon’ which means “large intestine.” The grammatical 'colon' comes from the Greek ‘kōlon’ which means “limb.” Both are a means to an end.
