What are the genetic mechanisms for the #evolution of novel traits? This study by @brhopkins92.bsky.social &co links #Drosophila sex comb teeth to expression changes within ancestral cells, leading to diverged metabolic/developmental rates, and a novel structure. 🧪 #AcademicSky plos.io/4gQOnZK
Graphical abstract on the gain of a novel trait in Drosophila. The teeth of the recently evolved, male-specific Drosophila sex comb evolved from a more ancient organ, the mechanosensory bristle. We show that changes in the expression of genes that are shared between mechanosensory bristle and sex comb teeth cells lead to changes in a variety of fundamental cellular processes that together enable the morphological transformation.

The photo, phylogeny, general design are those of the corresponding author(s). They made the bristle schematics in biorender and the fly silhouette is their modified drawing of D. melanogaster from SciDraw (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3925939).

Congratulations to ESI alum @bryangitschlag.bsky.social, who is opening a lab this fall at the Univ. S. Carolina. Bryan's PhD at Vandy (Patel lab) characterized how "cheater" mitochondrial DNA persists in populations despite reducing host fitness. Bryan's now hiring!

A team led by Research Assistant Prof David Rinker has harnessed ML to tackle the tricky issue of drug resistance in fungi. They’ve figured out how to pinpoint the vulnerabilities in pathogens, helping predict which drugs may be effective. See more on our home page #Evolution
Circular phylogenetic tree showing evolutionary relationships among hundreds of yeast species analyzed in the study. Branches are colored by fungal order, and concentric colored rings around the outside indicate whether each species is resistant to seven antifungal drugs: fluconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole, terbinafine, caspofungin, 5-fluorocytosine, and amphotericin B. The visualization illustrates that antifungal resistance occurs across many evolutionary lineages rather than being confined to a single group.Group photo of the Rokas Lab in 2023, showing 11 researchers standing on the steps beneath a stone archway. Three people in the center are shown in color while the rest of the image is in black and white. This project builds on our recent observations that pathogenic yeasts vary substantially in their in vitro susceptibility to external stress and aims to:
Characterize why this variation exists using comparative genomics and transcriptomics.
Identify strategies to sensitize pathogenic yeasts to host-like stress for antifungal therapy development.
Validate targets using genetic knockout or overexpression strategies.

What we’re looking for:
Curious and motivated student with a willingness to learn new things.
Experience in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, and/or genomics is an asset.
Strong research ethics and the ability to work respectfully as part of a diverse team.

A bit about the Horianopoulos lab - see lab website (QR code) for more:
Interested in what makes yeast vary (macroevolution of yeasts).
Focused on identifying and manipulating the genetic determinants of yeast stress responses.
Located in the Food Science Department at the University of Guelph.
Has a network of local and global collaborators.
How to apply:
Interested applicants should contact Dr. Horianopoulos (lhoriano@uoguelph.ca) by July 15, 2026 with a CV and cover letter. Please put “Horianopoulos lab graduate position” as the subject line. A Fall 2026 or Winter 2027 start is preferred.
